Backup quarterback Garrett Green got a look at wide receiver today. Green, who played safety at Notre Dame High School, is very athletic and is viewed not only as a quarterback but also a utility player. Green had two nice catches on the day and drew the loudest cheer of the day from his teammates.
Washington Looks Quick
Chauncey Washington came into camp noticeably thinner than last year. With the drop in weight, Washington looks to have added some quickness. He had a spectacular 78-yard run at Sunday's scrimmage and has followed it up with two impressive practices.
Quarterbacks are Off-Limits
With quarterback Mark Sanchez sidelined with a hairline fracture in his right thumb, Pete Carroll is being extra cautious with the healthy quarterbacks. Carroll stopped team drills after Kaluka Maiava got too close to Michael McDonald on a pass attempt and warned the defensive players to stay away from the guys in the yellow jerseys.
Halfway through the practice, Stanley Havili caught a pass and was immediately hit by a defender. After Havili went down, he stayed on the ground grabbing his shoulder and didn't get up for a few tense moments. We caught up with Havili after the practice and he said "Yeah, I just had a little stinger. I'll be fine".
Mark Sanchez will be out 3-6 weeks with a hairline fracture in his right thumb. With Sanchez out, Michael McDonald and Aaron Corp got extra reps today.
Punt protection was an area that the coaches emphasized early in today's practice. After having two punts blocked in Sunday's scrimmage, this was definitely an area that needed work. The protection and coverage was much improved this afternoon. Punter Greg Woidneck had an exceptionally good day today booming punt after punt. Woidneck's punts consistently got over four seconds of hang time.
Hit of the Day
Freshman linebacker Malcolm Smith delivered a brutal hit on Brandon Carswell during team drills. Carswell caught a pass over the middle and never saw Smith coming his way. As soon as Carswell turned up the field, he was blind-sided by Smith and went head over heels. Needless to say, the hit drew a loud reaction from the crowd.
Corp Looks Sharp
With Mark Sanchez sidelined with an injured right thumb, Aaron Corp got extended playing time today. Corp has shown steady improvement in every practice. What is unique about Corp is his mobility in the pocket. He is able to escape the pressure and throw accurately while on the move. Several times during camp he has been able to avoid the pass rush and hit either the tight end or running back down the field.
