Thursday Practice Notes

A new face starting on the offensive line, another running back shelved for Saturday, both stories and more in Thursday's practice report from

The Trojans came out Thursday for their last full practice before the season opener against Idaho.

O'Dowd at Center

After Matt Spanos went down with a tear in his triceps muscle, the coaches planned on moving Jeff Byers to center and Drew Radovich to left guard. But after a day of practice Pete Carroll decided to have true freshman Kristofer O'Dowd replace Spanos at center.

The move allows Jeff Byers to stay at left guard and preserve some continuity on the offensive line. "The more we looked at it, why should we move two guys because one isn't in there?" said Carroll.

"Jeff has had a great camp and a great build-up and we've come to the conclusion that he'll be able to communicate and help Kristofer (O'Dowd) in his first game."

Broderick Green Out

After Thursday's practice, Pete Carroll announced that Broderick Green will miss the Idaho game with a possible stress fracture in his foot.

"Broderick has a foot problem that we just found today. He's going to see the doctor right now. He might have one of those stress fracture things going on in his foot…I don't have the end result of that but the preliminary look is he might have a stress fracture," said Carroll.

Tim Floyd Sighting

Trojans basketball coach Tim Floyd was out at practice to watch the Trojans get ready for their season opener. Before practice, Tim Floyd and Pete Carroll met up for a brief chat. Floyd and the basketball team will play in an exhibition series in Mazatlan, Mexico on September 1st and 2nd.
