Not so good news, thus far the weather pattern has been great this week, but weather.com now forecasts showers for Friday and Saturday. Earlier in the week the rain was predicted to fall on Thursday and Friday and was to clear up for Saturday. With this new prediction, we may be sitting in rain come game time.
The WMB report at Howard Jones-Brian Kennedy Field at practice today was 67 degrees, wind 10mph from the southeast with 60% humidity. That would be good game time weather, if it holds.
Practicing in Pads
Players donned shells today, and the practice speed was at a nice clip. As practice got underway, Coach Carlisle worked the players and coaxed players to give more effort. Ken Norton Jr. continued to prod the players to exert energy as practice continued.
Vincent Joseph was on the field today with little ill effect of Saturday's injury. C.J. Gable will still be returning kicks, but Joseph is not far behind. Brian Cushing looks a little more comfortable and Clay Matthews is getting comfortable playing with the thumb cast - as previously noted, the cast is rather bulky.
As the team broke up into position drills, the Trojan Marching Band appropriately played "Tribute to Troy" on Cromwell Field. Norton continued to encourage the linebackers to play hard while playing defense. The special teams worked on punting and coverage. Alongside them, the kickers boomed some long balls.
Working Against the Scout Team
On the defensive side, Joseph played a little corner; it's refreshing to see him back on the field. Keith Rivers put on a solid performance, as did Kyle Moore and Sedrick Ellis. Mitch Mustain and Brandon Carswell work the defense hard.
Offensively, Chauncey Washington got some good work in. Joe McKnight is getting his legs back and should be contributing this year. Travon Patterson had a couple noticeable receptions. Mark Sanchez is returning to form; he's had a slow start since fracturing his thumb earlier in the year. Vidal Hazelton and David Ausberry each had a catch in the endzone.
Punts and Kicks
Prior to moving to the practice drills, the punt and kick teams got on the field. Joe McKnight and Desmond Reed caught punts. Joe Houston attempted some field goals and was good from the 12-yard line, missed from the 20 and was short on the 37-yard line.
Sermon on the Mount
At the end of practice, Pete Carroll gathered the whole team for a lengthy talk in the middle of the field. The team and coaches are gearing up for the WSU battle on Saturday at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
