USC quarterback John David Booty didn't participate in practice on Monday but
announced that he plans to try throwing with a glove starting tomorrow.
"My swelling is down. It feels great. I will probably wear a glove," said Booty. "Tomorrow I'm going regardless. I need to figure out some way to get this thing going so I can get back out there playing."
Booty said he would wait to see how he feels Tuesday but he plans to be
available to play Saturday.
"I think so yeah that's my goal," said Booty. "If I can throw I'm going to play."
Gerald Washington Moving to Offense
With all the injuries to the offensive line the coaches are looking to add
some depth any way they can. Defensive end Gerald Washington has switched to the
offensive side of the ball and will add some depth at the offensive tackle spot.
It wasn't a drastic move for Washington who came to USC as a tight end.
"He's going to help us. Being a tight end in his background he knows the basics of the offense. In an emergency situation he can help us," said Carroll.
Washington stayed after practice with offensive line coach Pat Ruel and worked on his footwork.
Maualuga Questionable for Saturday
USC middle linebacker Rey Maualuga didn't practice on Monday and didn't seem
optimistic that he would be able to return for the Notre Dame game.
"I get my MRI tonight but it just feels bad," said Maualuga.
Maualuga said the injury remains very painful and he still isn't able to run or jog. "It was one of the worst feelings I felt. I knew it was like I'm done for the day," said Maualuga.
Officially Maualuga is listed as having a hip pointer but he seemed to think the injury could be worse. "I came out 'cause I felt a pop," said Maualuga.
Cushing Could Return
While it appears that Rey Maualuga won't be available this Saturday to play against Notre Dame, the word on Brian Cushing was much more positive Monday. Cushing went through full practice today and plans to test his ankle with full contact on Tuesday. "I should be hitting and then I will see the doctor's tomorrow night and tell them how I feel and then just evaluate things from there," said Cushing.
Cushing feels he has a real chance to return and contribute this weekend against the Fighting Irish. "I think it's realistic. I came out feeling pretty good today. I really didn't feel any pain during practice. Right now I am pretty confident so I will take it day by day," said Cushing.
Offensive Line Update
After practice Pete Carroll sounded upbeat about the possibility of returning two linemen. "Chilo (Rachal) is at the doctor today, but tomorrow he has a chance to get back out. Nick Howell returned to the practice field today, stuff like that just gives you a boost."
Sam Baker has a pulled hamstring but said he plans on playing.
Gerald Washington was also moved to offensive line to add some much needed depth at the tackle position.
Carroll on the Quarterback Situation:
"Nothing has really changed as far as the quarterback situation. We are going to go with Mark as the starter going into tomorrow's practice. John's going to do a little bit of throwing tomorrow and see how it feels and then we will just see where we are. Both
of those guys are studying to play. Mark is going to get all the reps tomorrow and then we will see where we are."
Pete Carroll on playing Notre Dame:
"This is a fun week for us. It's a fun match up to play Notre Dame and all that. I'm excited for us to keep moving forward. This is the start of the second half of the season for us. We have to see if we can get this thing into high gear in the next couple weeks and see if we can really come together."
Pete Carroll on Injuries:
"I know it looks like we are struggling with the injuries and stuff like that but we got guys coming back too. It's great to see (Brian) Cushing get back out here and Stafon (Johnson). They are barely out here. Nick Howell returned to the practice field today, stuff like that just gives you a boost."

Pete Carroll on Rey Maualuga's injury:
"We don't know about Rey's deal yet until we get the results back. Thomas Williams will line up at the Mike spot with the first group and (Brian) Cushing and Clay Mathews will be playing at the Sam spot."
Pete Carroll on the possibility of Brian Cushing playing:
"We would love for him to get out there and start playing again. He has missed the whole first half of the season basically. So we will just have to assess how he is doing."
