The USC Men's Basketball team defeats pesky San Diego behind the shooting of O.J. Mayo and Taj Gibson who score 20 points a piece in the Anaheim Classic.
Trojans improve to 3-1 while leaving Toreros with a 2-3 record. San Diego stayed within five points throughout the second half until Mayo takes matters into his own hands and led USC to a game ending 11-6 run that put the game away for good.
A much heralded freshman, Mayo led the Trojans on both offense and defense. He shot 7-15, 20 points and had three assists. Mayo also played tenacious defense and came away with three steals.
Meanwhile, forward Taj Gibson contributed 20 points, 12 rebounds and had three blocked shots.
Brandon Johnson was 8-20, 19 points in a losing effort for San Diego.
After a disappointing opening day loss to Mercer, USC has rolled off three straight wins.
Davon Jefferson saw his first action and was 2-5, 5 points on the evening. With the addition of Jefferson and Daniel Hackett, who missed the first game due to injury, the Trojans are beginning to gel.
The Anaheim Classic ends Sunday.
