Clay de Leon Reviews Trojans' Saturday Practice
Ho! Ho! Ho! Christmas is in the Air (and So Were Recruits)
What jumped out at today's practice were the recruits at Howard Jones Field today. Having fun on the field, donning a red and white Christmas stocking hat was none other than Long Beach Poly star, Vaughn Telemaque. He spent time observing practice and talking to coach Rocky Seto.
Telemaque is the 6'2", 187 safety from Poly High School in Long Beach, California. In the championship game against Crespi High, Telemaque recorded 11 tackles and three interceptions, leading Poly High to the victory.
Other Recruits Filling the Air
Curtis McNeal, 5'6", 177 – USC verbal commit, Scout.com 4-star running back from Venice Senior High School, California.
Robbie Boyer, 6', 170 – prospect, Scout.com 3-star wide receiver from Mater Dei High School, California. Incidentally, Boyer is a cousin of 2009 quarterback prospect Matt Barkley, also from Mater Dei.
Turnover Wednesday Saturday
It was practice as almost-usual this Pre-Rose Bowl Turnover Wednesday/Saturday for the USC Trojans. Today's routine was "Turnover/No Turnover" normally practiced on Wednesdays during the regular season. The practice routine has been changed due to finals and post season practice scheduling.
Short Field (1st unit defense against scout team) – Marc Tyler fumbled and Christian Tupou returned the ball for a touchdown. Pete Carroll commented that Tupou has had an outstanding couple weeks of practice. Taylor Mays broke up an Aaron Corp pass, which he should have intercepted. Kevin Ellison also batted down a pass.
Special teams – the field goal unit kicked a PAT and three consecutive field goals.
1 on 1's – John David Booty took the majority of the first team reps, although Mark Sanchez and Mitch Mustain got some playing time. Joe McKnight was quite impressive as he continues to improve his game. Fred Davis had a solid afternoon, as did Patrick Turner.
Injury Report – the extra time off has helped injured Trojans to recover. The days off helps Keith Rivers and Brian Cushing to gain strength although neither will be 100 percent come the Rose Bowl, they will be improved. Chilo Rachal was hobbled the last two practices. Chauncey Washington returned to the practice field today but did not participate.
