Trojans Sting Hornets at Galen Center
Clay de Leon Recaps the 83-54 USC Victory
Over Delaware State
Red Hot Shooting
On cool December evening, as a misty rain
fell over the Galen Center, the red hot USC Trojans rolled over the Delaware State
Hornets on 68.1% field goal shooting. The school record set in 1983 is 71.1%.
The Trojans were led by Dwight Lewis'18 and Davon Jefferson's 17 points. O.J. Mayo added 12 points and Angelo Johnson had 11.
O.J. Mayo Better than Advertised
O.J. Mayo scored just 12 points on 5-6
shooting. What wasn't advertised about Mayo is his self-less attitude, team
first belief and his willingness to trust in his coaches. Before arriving at USC,
one may have had an idea that Mayo, the superstar would be averaging 30 attempts
and 30 points per game. What is becoming reality is that Mayo looks for the team
to win above wanting stardom or being the high point man every game.
When discussing his point total, Mayo said,
"I think we did well, we have five players who can score the basketball, we
showed that tonight, it was a good job." He explained the 68.1% field goal
percentage, "We converted a lot in transition and then we hit some open
After almost two weeks of rest, Mayo
explained the team's vision for this game, "We just wanted to ‘bring it'
on defense. We worked a lot on transition basketball on offense."
What shouldn't be overlooked is Mayo's
defense. He had two steals and a blocked shot and played tenacious defense all
night. Mayo also contributed four assists and three rebounds on the night.
Tim Floyd is a Happy Camper
On the team's effort, Coach Floyd said,
"I was really pleased with our unselfishness, I thought we really made that
next extra pass more than any time this year. The offense didn't die in any
one guy's hand."
"They played a box-and-one against O.J.
(Mayo), they double teamed O.J. every time he caught the ball, I thought he
played with great poise."
Sights and Sounds (of Petros?)
The Public Address announcer at the Galen
Center is none other than USC alumnus, Petros Papadakis, no matter how you feel
about his flamboyancy, Papadakis is a keeper. His voice and enthusiasm is just
what the Galen Center was built for.
At all basketball games, both the USC Song
Girls and the USC Dance Team are on hand. The Dance Team rivals the Song Girls
for both entertainment and tradition.
Assistant Band Director Tony Fox has led the Basketball Band for years, Ben Chua has been leading the Trojan Band these days, just when Trojan Basketball is getting to be fun!
Mamadou Diarra entered the game at the 4:43
mark in the second half. If Diarra can get healthy, he would be an added big-man
in the middle that would help the Trojans in Pac-10 play.
