Metcalf is the 9th Commitment for the 2009 Recruiting Class

In the latest news from USC's junior meeting on campus, February 2, 2008, Chris Metcalf has decided to verbally commit to the Trojans. Coaches offered Metcalf a week ago, but he wanted to weigh his options before committing. Metcalf said he had been thinking about it all week, and couldn't stop talking about his offer to everyone. He decided to end the suspense and commit to the Trojans.

Chris Metcalf's Junior Day

Metcalf grew up in a Trojan family. He lives with his Uncle and Aunt, and plays football with his cousin, Justin Brown, who also is looking to play for USC. Metcalf is also cousins with the Simmons family (cousins Melvin who played for USC, Maurice, an incoming freshman and Marquis who is a Trojan commit for 2009).

Metcalf currently plays linebacker, but also played safety in his sophomore season. He will be highly-ranked player when Scout completes its ranking for the 2009 recruiting class.

Recently we asked Metcalf to summarize his junior day experience, he said, "It was great, I loved every thing about it. I really enjoyed junior day, Pete Carroll took us around campus, and it was awesome. I like the campus, I really liked it."

About being offered, Metcalf said, "Pete Carroll offered me. I told Pete Carroll USC is my number one option. I couldn't commit right away, that early. I met Rocky Seto, Ken Norton Jr. and the whole coaching staff."

When asked who he spent time with at USC, he said, "Marquis Simmons, my cousin, my other cousin, Justin Brown. I spent time with a lot of other players. We toured campus seen (national) titles, and highlight tapes of the previous season. Saw the campus, Rose Garden, Coliseum, and the basketball game."

We asked Metcalf what it would take for him to make his commitment, he replied, "Get to know the players better, feeling the atmosphere, if I like what's around me. If the coaches seem ‘swell' it's all going to come."

We asked him when he might make his decision and he replied, "I will make my decision before spring ball or close to there. I am just working out now, with my speed. Good competition. USC is the #3 team in the nation. So I have to come in and compete. I am very confident going into this season."

Finally, Metcalf said, "I'm working with my coach to get fast and to pace myself. Most likely I'll go to some camps over the summer."

What a Difference a Week Makes

A week later, SCPlaybook called his uncle, Yves Brown, to ask him if Metcalf committed. He said, "I believe Chris did commit, I think he just committed to a coach…"

Brown then handed his phone over to Metcalf. Metcalf said, "Yeah, I committed today. I talked to coach Ken Norton Jr. today. I've been thinking about it ever since Junior Day. I talked to my mom about it every day; I talked to my coach about it every day. I even talked to my players every day. My players are telling me ‘just do what your heart tells you to do'."

He continued, "I just came in today, and I called coach Ken Norton, and I said, ‘Coach Norton, I've been thinking about the offer and I want you to know I appreciate it. I want to commit'."

We asked him what position the Trojans are recruiting him for and he said, "Coaches are recruiting him as safety and linebacker. In 10th grade I played safety, last year I played linebacker, I talked to Coach Rocky Seto and Coach Ken Norton and they said, ‘On some plays we'll have you close to the ball and on some plays we'll have you cover somebody.' I just want to fit in. I want to help the team win."

Preparing for the Future

Metcalf pondered the immediate future, "I went to junior day last Saturday, and I got my offer then. There's a couple of camps coming up so I'll go and have some fun and work on some fundamentals. I'm going to start running track next week, just getting ready for the season. We have spring ball (at high school). I'm just working on my speed."

Uncle Yves is a Happy Camper

Metcalf lives with his uncle Yves Brown and cousin Justin Brown.

Yves Brown concluded, "I feel pretty good, as long as they have the grades, whatever they do in their life, I'm happy, education comes first for me. It's one down and one to go." Justin Brown (son) wants to go to USC as well.

Reflecting on Metcalf's decision, Yves Brown said, "He likes ‘SC, that's all we talk about. I'm an ‘SC fan, my sister went to ‘SC and we go to the games." Finally Brown said, " My son is Justin Brown (Chris' cousin), I want my son to go to ‘SC. He's striving to get to USC. We'll try to get him out to the camps. Chris lives with us."

Excellent Recruiting Class in 2009

Metcalf marks the ninth verbal commitment the Trojans have received for the 2009 class. The current list includes some of California's top prospects, including the #1 prospect in the nation, quarterback Matt Barkley. Others on the list are: T.J. Mc Donald, Kevin Graf, Morrell Presley, Marquis Simmons, Randall Carroll, Patrick Hall, and De'Von Flournoy.
