As USC's Spring Break got underway, the Trojan Football team also will be taking the week off from off-season conditioning and workouts. Most players have decided to take some time off before returning to campus. When the Trojans reconvene in a little over a week, Spring Camp will begin. Camp will be held March 25 through April 19, culminating in "The Huddle" scrimmage at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
The field felt hot-it was 72 degrees, but it felt like 80, the saving grace was a slight ocean breeze. This however, being an unofficial throw-around, the Gatorade coolers weren't on the field and the players looked worn.
In the last off-season workout before spring break, the team had a short workout with coaches, which included: sprints, drills, stretching and exercises. After warming up, the team broke up into positions and practiced specific drills.
The offensive line, defensive line, linebackers, defensive backs, special teams, running backs, quarterbacks and receivers were drilled individually by their respective coaches. Special attention was given to individual technique.
After the coaches left the field, the team had the usual players-only throw-around, linemen on Brian Kennedy Field, defensive unit on the south end of Howard Jones Field and the offensive unit on the north end.
Mark Sanchez led the team through 11-on-11's. On his first series he passed to Damian Williams who unsuccessfully tried to catch a pass while keeping his toes inbounds. Joe McKnight took a handoff for a long gain. Mitch Mustain and Joe McKnight left early, Mustain stating he would spend a couple days back home for spring break as he left the field.
Aaron Corp then led a series of downs. His first pass to Brandon Carswell fell incomplete. He then had a handoff to Broderick Green in the middle, Green is looking dominating in the middle of the field. Corp then completed a pass to tight end Rhett Ellison, followed by a Marc Tyler run. His final pass fell incomplete to Patrick Turner.
Sanchez started his second set of downs and was directing traffic, showing more leadership. Williams again missed a pass. Patrick Turner had an impressive catch, making a 360 degree turn to grab the ball with his back to the sideline.
Corp led another series, leading off with Broderick Green up middle. His final toss was a sideline pass to Allen Bradford for a touchdown.
The linemen left the field and the rest of the team practiced some 7-on-7's. Garrett Green caught a Sanchez pass wide, Green has impressed in workouts. C.J. Gable caught short pass on the sideline. This was followed up with two consecutive Rhett Ellison receptions up the middle of the defense. David Ausberry caught a pass on the sideline. Stanley Havili made a statement, catching the ball in the middle for touchdown.
The team takes a week off for spring break, when they return, Spring Camp will commence.
Kevin Ellison and Havili were dancing and goofing around the field during a break.
Vidal Hazelton and Travon Patterson have been on the field, building strength and stamina after their respective surgeries. Hazelton said he will be working out over the break to continue to build strength. He says he will be ready for Spring Camp.
Garrett Green worked a little with the special teams.
Kris Richard had his first official day with the team as a Graduate Assistant.
