Tuesday Practice: Shaking Off Scrimmage

Trojans Return to the Practice Field After Sunday Scrimmage

The Trojans returned to Howard Jones-Brian Kennedy Field today, after a successful scrimmage on Sunday. Players got back into the practice mode and a few were shaking off minor injuries incurred at the scrimmage.

Seeing Double

Taylor Mays and Anthony McCoy sat out today's practice. The two met in a head on collision on Sunday, when Mays layed McCoy out in the endzone. To McCoy's credit, he got up and played in the next play from scrimmage. Mays laid on the floor of the turf for a few minutes before getting up. McCoy did not feel the effects until a few plays later.

Coaches held both players out of practice for what was presumably concussions. On Tuesday Mays said, "I got ‘knocked –out' for a little bit, I'm taking a couple days out, but I'll be okay. I hit (Anthony) McCoy, but he didn't practice either, so it's okay (laughter)."

Players out of practice today: Mays and McCoy, Malcolm Smith (sore hamstring), Rey Maualuga (hamstring), Kaluka Maiava (out for Spring), Kevin Ellison, Jordan Campbell and Josh Pinkard.

Crowd Watching

A couple of recruits were in attendance, including De'von Flournoy and incoming freshman Tyron Smith.

John Papadakis roamed the sidelines.

Sedrick Ellis and Will Collins were on the sidelines as well.

Volleyball Coach Bill Ferguson was in attendance. The No. 10-ranked USC men's volleyball team (13-13 overall, 10-10 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation)—is fresh off of a win over Pepperdine and concludes its regular season on the road when it plays a pair of matches at No. 2 BYU (21-4, 16-4) this Friday and Saturday (April 11 and 12) at 7 p.m.

Practice Notes

After warm-ups and position drills, the Special Teams met on Howard Jones Field to practice punting, where Greg Woidneck punted to an awaiting Stafon Johnson.

The teams then moved to Brian Kennedy Field to practice inside running. Mark Sanchez led a series of downs, leading Stafon Johnson, C.J. Gable Marc Tyler and Broderick Green. Green ripped off the best run, one that went for seven yards.

Aaron Corp then led a series, handing off the ball to Gable, Tyler and Green. On the last play of this series, Corp mishandled the snap and Nick Garratt picked the ball up to end the drill.

Special Teams then practiced punting again, with three punts to Brandon Carswell. A fourth punt was blocked.

During 11-on-11's, Allen Bradford again shined with a 45-yard run from scrimmage for a touchdown. Travon Patterson had a nice afternoon, making several catches. Stafon Johnson took a pitch for about 20 yards down field.Clay Matthews had a highlight fumble recovery on a botched exchange from quarterback Aaron Corp to wide receiver David Ausberry. Matthews took the ball the other way for a touchdown.

The Trojans return to practice Thursday, Howard Jones Field at 4:00 pm. There will be no practice on Friday in anticipation of Saturday practice and ‘Swim with Mike' at McDonald's Swim Stadium.
