Scrimmage Two: It's All About the ‘D'

Defense Impresses, Sanchez/Mustain Throw One Touchdown Each

In a scrimmage where the defense shined, Mark Sanchez and Mitch Mustain each threw for a touchdown and an interception. Kevin Thomas led the defense with six tackles, but he also rushed the quarterbacks on blitzes that gave them fits.

Mike Morgan had five tackles and a pass deflection. Rey Maualuga, Marshall Jones and Matthew Jordan each had five tackles. Shareece Wright had four tackles and an interception and Shane Horton also came up with an interception.

Busy Day on Campus

'Swim with Mike' was held at adjacent McDonald's Swim Stadium. Some football players and coaches participated in 'Swim with Mike,' cooling off after a very hot afternoon in the sun. There was a barbeque after the scrimmage, which was held as a fund-raiser for the 'Swim with Mike' festivities.

The football team gathered for the barbeque and got out of the hot sun, sitting under a canopy at Howard Jones Field. Caterers from St. Vincent's Meal program served up barbecued chicken, pork ribs and sausages, a nice exclamation point to a hard day of practice.

The baseball team took to the diamond at 1:30 where they defeated Cal for the second time in two days. The number 5-ranked Bears were downed by the Trojans 17-1 Friday night and 11-5 Saturday afternoon. The Trojans have won eight of their last nine outings.

Back to Football

Both Sanchez and Mustain fared well enough on the football field, and with neither Mustain nor Aaron Corp playing over the top football, Sanchez seems destined to be the starter come Fall Camp.

Running Backs

On Friday, Pete Carroll stated that he would like to see the younger ball carriers on the field. True to his word, Broderick Green had seven carries for 35 yards, with a long run of 24 yards.

Allen Bradford continues his determined running with five carries for 30 yards. Bradford peeled off a 24 yard run. C.J. Gable had a nice afternoon with four carries for 50 yards, with an impressive run of 29 yards. Stafon Johnson had nine yards on six carries and Marc Tyler had three for 18 yards.

Receivers

Four receivers had 3 catches: Rhett Ellison (45 yards), Patrick Turner (43), Damian Williams (41), David Ausberry had 35 yards. Adam Goodman, Ronald Johnson, C.J. Gable, Travon Patterson, and Garrett Green each had two receptions.

Joe McKnight

Running Back/Receiver Joe McKnight was held out of practice and will miss the remainder of Spring Camp. McKnight dropped a class on Friday, which put him under the NCAA minimum of 12 units per semester. McKnight will make up the class in the summer and should be back on the field for Fall Camp.

Defensively Speaking

Clay Matthews, Mike Morgan, Shareece Wright, Matthew Jordan, Kevin Thomas, Jordan Campbell and Christian Tupou each had good games for the defense.

Matthews and Thomas blitzed the quarterbacks and gave them fits. Morgan and Tupou also harassed the quarterbacks throughout the afternoon. Will Harris had a nice week of practice and had some stops in the defensive backfield.

On the Side

Kevin Graf and Uona Kaveinga were on the sidelines. Kaveinga stated he is anxious to get on the football field. He did say that the players seemed to slow down in the second half.

Tiny Malu and Jordan Cameron were also in attendance. Malu seems to have put on some bulk if that is at all possible.

Taylor Mays, Kevin Ellison, Cary Harris, Kyle Moore, Luthur Brown and Martin Coleman were all held out of practice.

Fox Sports News was filming on the sidelines. Lindsay Soto, Michael Eaves and John Jackson took turns filming spots for the network. Jackson said his segment will be aired on Wednesday Night's Lexus Gauntlet.

Big Week Ahead

The Trojans are scheduled to practice on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday this week. Spring Camp will conclude with the annual "Trojan Huddle," USC's end-of-spring practice intrasquad football scrimmage, 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, at the Coliseum.
