An Unprecedented Seven Trojans Drafted on Day 1
The theme around the Trojan football team is ‘compete.' Coach Pete Carroll impresses his players that playing hard everyday in practice is priority one. Most players take the mantra to heart and the work ethic around Howard Jones Field is always intense.
Players practice hard and fast and work just as diligently during the off-season. The fruits of this ethic paid off on Day 1 of the NFL draft. An unprecedented seven Trojans were taken, including four in the first round and three in the second.
Leading the way for the Trojans was a pair in the top ten; Sedrick Ellis (DT) was picked seventh by the New Orleans Saints and Keith Rivers (LB) ninth by the Cincinnati Bengals. Ellis will join fellow Trojan Reggie Bush and Rivers will meet up with Carson Palmer.
Rounding out the first round for USC was a pair of linemen; Sam Baker (OT) was drafted 21st by the Atlanta Falcons and Lawrence Jackson (DE) was drafted 28th by the Seattle Seahawks. Jackson will be joining fellow Trojan Lofa Tatupu.
And if That Were Not Enough
Three more Trojans joined the Day 1 party in the second round. A trio of Trojans rounded off the first day led by early NFL entry, Chilo Rachal (OG), who was picked 39th by the San Francisco 49ers. Arguably the best tight end in the country, Mackey Award recipient Fred Davis was chosen 48th by the Washington Redskins. As the day drew to a close, the final pick in the second round (63rd) by the New York Giants, was a mild surprise, Terrell Thomas (CB), he will join Steve Smith with the Superbowl Champions. This put the topping on an excellent day for Trojans.
