Donte Whitner update

WeAreSC caught up with Cleveland (OH) Glenville's Donte Whitner, currently rated as the #1 cornerback prospect in the nation by The Insiders. He now has all five of his visits scheduled and it looks like he could be set to reach a decision well before signing day.

WeAreSC- Talk a little about your season.  How did you do this year?

Whitner- "Well, my season went well.  Our season ended two weeks ago.  We ended up 8-2.  We were supposed to go into the playoffs but we missed it by half a point."

WeAreSC- Do you have any of your stats?

Whitner- "I had about 60 tackles, 10 for loss, 3 interceptions, 1 of those for a touchdown, about 19 pass breakups.  I also had 19 touchdowns, 5 on special teams, on defense I had 4, and the rest were on offense."

WeAreSC- Sounds like you were all over the place.  Where were you playing at?

Whitner- "On defense I played linebacker, corner, and safety.  I was a receiver on offense."

WeAreSC- Did you return both punts and kickoffs?

Whitner- "Yeah, punts and kickoffs."

WeAreSC- Talk a little bit about recruiting.  How's that been going?

Whitner- "Recruiting has been going well.  I've scheduled all five of my visits.  I'm going to Ohio State on November 23rd, USC for November 29th, the first weekend of December I have Michigan, the second week I have Notre Dame, and the next weekend I have Miami, Florida."

WeAreSC- Do you have a leader or group of leaders out of those five schools?

Whitner- "No, I don't have any leaders."

WeAreSC- What are your priorities in choosing a school and what will you be looking for on your trips?

Whitner- "Tradition and family atmosphere.  That's pretty much it."

WeAreSC- Are you still hearing from the USC coaches regularly?

Whitner- "Yeah, I talk mostly to Coach Kiffin.  He's a pretty nice guy.  He had all of my plane schedules and everything sent to me early.  He talks to me about coming there and being able to contribute early in my career, and just about how the school is, and about the freshmen that are there now.  I also talked to Coach Carroll a little bit."

WeAreSC- What do you think of Coach Carroll?

Whitner- "Coach Carroll is a great guy.  I know he coached in the NFL a lot.  He coached some of those DB's in the NFL right now, and you know, that's my position.  I've been thinking real hard about that."

WeAreSC- Have you been able to catch any USC games on TV?

Whitner- "Yeah, I've caught a lot of the USC games on TV.  Most of their games are on up here."

WeAreSC- Have you been watching the defense and how you might fit in?

Whitner- "Yeah, I look to see how I might fit in.  I also look at the freshmen that they play right now."

WeAreSC- Is Dareus [Hiley] taking his official to USC the same weekend that you are?

Whitner- "Yeah."

WeAreSC- I noticed that the two of you are taking a lot of the same trips.  Do you ever talk about going to the same school?

Whitner- "Yeah, we are taking most of our visits together.  We don't really talk about going to the same school that much, but I think it is a possibility."

WeAreSC- One thing I heard recently was that you might be graduating from high school early and enrolling in time for spring ball at the college you choose.  Is that something that you plan to do?

Whitner- "Yeah, It's almost for sure.  I just have to get a couple more O.K.'s from the administrators here, but that is almost for sure."

WeAreSC- So when would you be finished with your last semester at Glenville?

Whitner- "It's either the end of December or the first or second week of January."

WeAreSC- What's your current height and weight?

Whitner- "Right now I'm 6'0, 180."

WeAreSC- I know there's a junior at your school, Ted Ginn Jr., who already has an offer from USC.  Talk a little about what kind of player he is.

Whitner- "Well, he's a very fast player.  He plays receiver and corner.  I think he could play either one in college, receiver or corner." Top Stories
