Rising Star Alshon Jeffrey

Two weeks before the USC Rising Stars Camp, Alshon Jeffrey committed to the Trojans. At the time Jeffrey confided that he always liked the Trojans and that he had watched them growing up, watching the likes of Reggie Bush, Mike Williams and Carson Palmer. Jeffrey had a great showing at the camp, and played well at wide receiver.

Jeffrey, a Scout.com #20, 4-star wide receiver is from Calhoun County High School (St. Matthews, SC). He was accompanied to Los Angeles by his head coach, Walter Wilson. Jeffrey is a big target at 6'4" - 200 lbs. who displayed good hands and the ability to come up with the ball over defenders. After turning in a great camp, Jeffrey and Coach Wilson boarded the plane the same day and returned home.

Clay de Leon caught up with Alshon Jeffrey and Coach Wilson to discuss their experience at USC Rising Stars Camp.

Alshon Jeffrey's high school head coach, Walter Wilson has encouraged Jeffrey to chase his dream of becoming a Trojan for the better part of a year. We asked him about his perceptions of the Rising Stars Camp. Said Wilson "The trip was good, long flight, but it was good. (Alson did well) it wasn't a surprise for me."

How do you think the camp went for Alshon?

"I think it was a good experience, and also a life changing experience for him. The visit made his commitment even more solid than it already was. He's solid as a rock."

Wilson continued, "He fell in love with Barkley, and that's a good thing because he hung out with the ‘elite,' it's a good thing that they hung out together."

Coach Wilson On USC Coaches

Wilson discussed Jeffrey's experience with the coaches, "I think he fell in love with the coaches, he said ‘they stay on the tip, they make you want to play for them.' He was very impressed. He worked with Coach John Morton, he's a good guy as well as a great coach."

What were your impressions of the camp?

"I was impressed also, I've worked a lot of camps, and this was by far the most intense camp I've been in. The thing about it was, the kids worked and the coaches kept them working, just by their attitudes. I was very impressed with Coach Carroll and his staff."

Wilson talked about Barkley, "It's good that he worked with Matt Barkley. They'll get to do it again. Alshon will be at the UnderArmour Game (along with Matt Barkley)."

We also talked to Jeffrey about his trip, he said, "California was great! Camp was wonderful. I roomed with T. J. McDonald. I learned a lot of things in camp…receiving high and tight." True to his word, Jeffrey turned heads when he caught some balls high and tight, one in particular for a touchdown from Matt Barkley at camp.

"The weather was great. At night we'd just hang out. I hung out with with Dillon Baxter and T.J. McDonald. T.J. is cool, he's nice, I know his dad was a Trojan, He won a national championship. We'd like to bring it too."

About the coaches, Jeffrey said, "The intensity of the coaches...it's nice, it's hype, you gotta bring it and I love that. You got to have that winning mentality. I like the way they tell you how it is, what it's going to be like on game day and how it really is out there. Coach Morton is a great guy."

Did you get to go to the Coliseum?

Jeffrey happily replied, "Oh yeah, I like the Coliseum, I'm in love with that, I love that…we got to go down the tunnel, I gotta get used to that…I'm ready to get me a championship!"

Did the camp help you with your commitment?

"Oh yeah, Fight on!"

It will be nice to see someone with the passion of Alshon Jeffrey strap on the Cardinal and Gold.
