Wednesday Practice: Sanchez Will Start

It has been coming for days but was finally made official after practice today. Mark Sanchez will be the Trojans starting quarterback for the season opener at Virginia. Look inside for news on Sanchez, Shareece Wright and much more.

Sanchez Officially Named Starter

It has been coming for days but was finally made official after practice today; Mark Sanchez will be the Trojans starting quarterback for the season opener at Virginia.

"They got a plane ticket for me so I'm ready," Sanchez joked when asked if he was going to start. "Once they said ‘you are good to go for the game' it was a big relief."

Sanchez met with team doctors on Tuesday night for a final evaluation of his injured knee and was officially cleared to play.

"Everything was OK with the doctors last night so he's going," Coach Carroll said after Wednesday's practice.

With the return of Sanchez, the Trojans offense is as healthy as they have been the entire fall.

Redshirt freshman Aaron Corp is the No.2 quarterback and Mitch Mustain is currently third on the depth chart.

Shareece Wright Back in Action

The news continues to be good on the injury front for the Trojans as cornerback Shareece Wright was able to make it through practice and could start in the opener.

"Shareece (Wright) got back on the practice field today," Coach Carroll said. "As far as being healthy for the game we are about as good as we could hope."

Wright was limited on Tuesday but participated in the majority of today's practice and is expected to play against Virginia on Saturday.

"I did a lot yesterday for the first time and I walk up feeling good," Wright said. "This is the most I have done since I have been hurt and I feel real good afterwards."

Buehler Adds to Offense

Kickers usually don't receive much attention on a roster filled with potential first-round draft picks, but it has been impossible to ignore the impressive fall that USC kicker David Buehler has put together.

Buehler has been remarkably accurate during fall camp, but what has caught the eye of the fans at Howard Jones Field and the coaches inside Heritage Hall is his added leg strength.

"We really do have an aspect of our kicking game that we haven't had for a while," Carroll said of Buehler's strong leg. "We haven't thought of our guys as hitting 50-yard field goals but that has to enter into our thinking at times.

"We have another aspect to scoring points."

On Tuesday, Buehler showed off his ability by connecting on a 59-yard field goal with plenty of room to spare.

"We have had really consistent kickers over the years but he can really bomb the ball," Carroll said.

Notes from the Field

Walking Wounded: Trey Henderson, Chris Galippo and Michael Morgan were among the players that didn't participate in practice on Wednesday.

Cornerbacks Shareece Wright and Brian Baucham both returned to the practice field on Wednesday. Wright could start at Virginia on Saturday.

Mark Sanchez connected with Vidal Hazelton for a touchdown pass. Hazelton beat Cary Harris, who nearly intercepted the pass.

Patrick Turner made a great diving catch over the middle on the Mark Sanchez's frist pass during 7-on-7.

Ronald Johnson caught a pair of deep passes from Mark Sanchez during 7-on-7.

Daniel Harper had an interception during 11-on-11 and Jordan Campbell had an interception during 7-on-7.

USC commit Byron Moore stopped by practice to get a look at the Trojans before they take on Virginia.

The Trojans will have a 90-minute practice Thursday morning before board a plane to Virginia.
