USC linebacker Rey Maualuga, who suffered a sprained MCL in his right knee against Oregon State, was out of practice for the third day in a row on Wednesday and isn't expected to be available this Saturday when the Trojans face the Oregon Ducks.
"With him not practicing today and the way it looks, he's not going to make it back," Pete Carroll said after practice. "We need to take care of him and get him well for this long haul coming up here so we are kind of looking ahead without him right now."
Alex Parsons to Start
USC offensive line coach Pat Ruel announced on Wednesday that Alex Parson will get the start at right guard against Oregon, in place of the injured Zack Heberer (sprained toe).
"He will start. He will start at right guard," Ruel said when asked about Parsons.
"I think Alex has done some really good things so I am pretty excited about him right now," Ruel added. "He's had two really good days of practice."
Hazelton Asks to Redshirt
USC wide receiver Vidal Hazelton told Pete Carroll that he would like to redshirt this season, after getting off to a slow start and suffering two ankle sprains.
"I have been talking to Coach Carroll about it," Hazelton admitted. "It was definitely my idea. I sprained my other ankle in the game against Oregon State."
The junior wide receiver has struggled to find a role in the offense this season and hasn't caught a single pass since the Trojans' season opening win at Virginia.
"I think I have to grow up as a person in certain areas," Hazelton said. "I think it would be good for me personally but it is up to Coach Carroll."
