Quoting Carroll: ASU Post-Game

The Trojans' defense shut down Rudy Carpenter and the Arizona State offense all afternoon en route to a 28-0 victory. SCPlaybook's Kevin Carden caught up with Pete Carroll to get the coaches thoughts on the win.

Pete Carroll on the play of USC's defense:

"This game was absolutely about our defense. Time and time again as the offense made their mistakes the defense wouldn't have it. They did a great job on third downs in not letting anything happen. I thought Fili (Moala) had a great game up front with those two great blocks. Kevin Thomas made a huge play with that interception return. Ellison made a bunch of huge plays for us out there on third down. And we love that the older guys were supporting the younger guys there at the end."

Pete Carroll on the play of cornerback Kevin Thomas:

"He's done really well. It was a huge play. The pressure on the quarterback made Rudy throw it poorly, and he took advantage of it and stuck it in the end zone. He played well other than that too. He had a lot of plays in this game."

Pete Carroll on USC's sloppy performance:

"We got sloppy with our turnovers today. That's not Trojan football. We could have easily been beaten today with some of those mistakes. This defense is playing incredible minus the penalties. It seems we always give them good field position. We really need to stay away from the quarterback's mug and let go of the face mask. We'll be more alert next week in practice."

Pete Carroll on the play of Mark Sanchez:

"Clearly Mark was struggling today. He wasn't at his best, but to tell you the truth we were surprised he played. He continues being a hero out there the way he steps up."

Pete Carroll on Arizona State QB Rudy Carpenter:

"The more he gets hit, the more he likes it in a sense. He's so tough. He's ridiculously tough. I really have tremendous respect for him."

Pete Carroll on Ryan Davidson:

"Ryan Davidson got our game ball today. He was also our pregame captain. I hope he had a beautiful weekend with us because it was absolutely great having him here with us. It wasn't a difficult decision naming him captain. We became friends a long time ago back with Lendale (White) and (Matt) Leinart. He always gets us up for our games."
