Thursday Practice Report

Who's In, Who's Out

Pete Carroll and the USC coaching staff had to get creative this week when putting together the 64-man travel roster due to several injuries and illnesses.

"We are pleased that we get the defensive guys back, but we are going to miss Joe (McKnight) and Butch (Lewis) for sure," Carroll said. "This creates opportunities for some other guys."

At running back, the Trojans will be without Joe McKnight (turf toe), Allen Bradford (torn labrum) and Marc Tyler (hip flexor). As a result, they will rely heavily on Stafon Johnson and C.J. Gable, with Broderick Green getting some playing time as well.

Brian Cushing and Kaluka Maiva practiced on Thursday and will play against the Washington State Cougars but Mike Morgan and Malcolm Smith should see more playing time than usual. Linebacker Jordan Campbell will miss the game due to an illness.

Jeff Byers, who rested his sore knee in practice this week, will start, but offensive tackle Butch Lewis will miss the game with an illness. With the absence of Lewis, Nick Howell will start at right tackle and Charles Brown will start at left tackle.

Coach Carroll also said that freshman offensive tackle Tyron Smith will get playing time this Saturday.

The defensive line will be without defensive end Everson Griffen, who didn't attend practice this week with an illness.

Wide receiver Jordan Cameron will also miss the trip to Pullman because of an illness.
