Pete Carroll has insisted all year that the competition for the backup quarterback spot would remain open, and that was evident once again on Monday, when Carroll revealed that Aaron Corp has overtaken Mitch Mustain on the depth chart.
While Mitch Mustain had been Mark Sanchez's backup for the second half of the season, Corp's play in recent weeks has elevated him to the No.2 spot.
"The last few weeks he has outplayed Mitch," Carroll said. "He's just done really well.
"Mitch has been battling too, but you can see in our turns that we have focused (Corp) with the second number of reps because he has deserved it.
Carroll said the coaches would be comfortable inserting the redshirt freshman in the lineup if anything was to happen to Mark Sanchez.
"He has been very consistent all through this preparation," Carroll said. "He deserves it and he earned it.
"It wasn't a quick decision or anything. We just watched it over time, and now that we are close to game time he would be the first guy up."
