By virtue of the Women of Troy rowing team's win over UCLA on Saturday (May 2) morning and then the historic sweep by the USC men and women in the track and field dual meet over the Bruins later in the day, the Trojans became the first school to capture the Lexus Gauntlet Trophy for two consecutive years since it was first awarded in 2001-02.
"We're extremely proud to be able to repeat as the Lexus Gauntlet Trophy champion over our crosstown rival and to keep the trophy on display in Heritage Hall for another year," said USC athletic director Mike Garrett. "Congratulations go out to our coaches and student-athletes in all of our sports. We've had a wonderful year athletically."
Points are awarded to the winner of each Trojan-Bruin contest throughout the year and the Lexus Gauntlet Trophy is presented to the school with the most points at year's end. A minimum of 57.5 points is required to win the trophy outright.
Previously, the winner of the Lexus Gauntlet Trophy had alternated every year. After USC captured the inaugural trophy in 2001-02, UCLA won it in 2002-03, USC recaptured it in 2003-04, UCLA won it back in 2004-05, USC claimed it in 2005-06, UCLA won it in 2006-07 and then USC claimed it last year.
