You can't go wrong with Wright

Demetrius Wright from Corona High was one of a select few elite prospects to get an invite to an ESPN sponsored passing event held last weekend in Florida. SCPlaybook spoke to Wright after he returned home early this morning. The experience was a great one for the kids from southern California as they won the event by defeating a team from Florida in the finals.

"It was a great experience we did great on the field," said Wright about the passing tournament in Florida. "There were a lot of good players there and you always had to be on your feet. But there were also a lot of good players from California."

The only other event Wright attended this spring and summer was the Los Angeles Combine held on May 31.

"I didn't really do too much this summer because I was working out at my school trying to help get my team better," said Wright. "I attended the Combine, but that was in the spring."

Although he hasn't finalized any plans for official visits, Wright said he has two scheduled for the fall and will take the alotted five.

"I plan on taking some trips when my season gets going and right now I've scheduled (official visits) to Washington and Tennessee," Wright said. "I'm visiting Tennessee when they play UCLA (Sept. 12) and I'm going to Washington when they play LSU (Sept. 5)."

Wright was asked about his interest in USC, UCLA and if he had other schools in mind for official visits other than Washington and Tennessee?

"I don't have any interest in UCLA, but USC is one of my top schools and a school I plan on visiting, too" said Wright. "It's so close to home and easy to visit. Arizona is also a school I want to visit and I'm still deciding on my fifth visit. I go up and down with Florida. Distance isn‘t really an issue, but they have strong depth at DB."

USC is also a team with a strong depth chart at defensive back.

"Their depth at defensive back is looking real good for USC this year," said Wright. "Next year they will lose three DB's to the draft, but they will still have five plus this years recruits. They already have two committed."

Wright earned First Team All-Big VIII Honors as a cornerback and named team's Most Outstanding Defensive Back as a junior at Corona (Calif.) in 2008. Had had 52 tackles, three interceptions and three fumble recoveries with three defensive touchdowns and had 62 carries for 450 yards and nine touchdowns, along with 16 receptions for 123 yards. He benches 300 pounds, squats 385 and has a 37-inch vertical jump.

Some of the honors Wright has earned:

1st. Team All Big-VII league
Team Most Outstanding Defensive Back
All Area Football Honorable Mention
2nd Team Riverside County All Conference
GSP Super ALL-State Underclass FB, 3rd Team
Nike All Combine Team 2009
U.S. Army All-American 2010 team

Wright says he'll major in either criminal justice or business.

Wright: "People don't throw to my side because I'll knock it down. I like hitting people and taking them down. I'm like Deion Sanders except I hit harder.

We'll have more from Wright this fall when we visit Corona next month. Top Stories
