Chris Martin keeping his options open

Chris Martin,'s No. 3 ranked defensive end, verbally committed to Notre Dame quite some time ago, but there's reason to believe he could end up at another school.

"I've just opened up my recruitment and keeping in touch with other schools, a select few schools," said Martin, who said he's still a Notre Dame commit.

USC was a school many thought Martin would end up signing with, but he ended up committing to Notre Dame.

But now USC, Florida, California and Notre Dame our schools Martin is considering.

"USC called earlier this week," said Martin. "Coach (Pat) Ruel called and asked how I was doing and said he had been talking to Coach (Pete) Carroll, and he was saying how much he really still likes me. Coach Ruel decided to see what was up with me and I told him, ‘If I answer the phone, I obviously have interest in keeping in touch with you.

"USC, Cal, Tennessee and Florida, are schools I'm looking at. And I was thinking about calling up UCLA."

Martin spent last year in the Phoenix area and planned on attending The Hun School of Princeton this year, but the $46,000 a year price tag was too high, so he ended up enrolling at Grandview High in Aurora, CO and is living with his cousins.

Those who have been to Aurora, know how beautiful it is.

"It's crazy beautiful out here," said Martin about Aurora.

Before the school year began, Martin wanted to graduate high school in December and enroll in college in January, but that has changed. He now plans on being at Grandview until the spring and enroll in college in the summer of 2010.

"I will not be a January enrollee," Martin said. "I will enroll in the fall.

Not enrolling in January would seem to take a lot of pressure off of Martin.

"I just got off the phone with Notre Dame and I love talking to them and everything, but in the end, it's a decision for me," said Martin about the school he will sign with. "Everyone will tell me what the best decision is for me, but it's up to me with what I want to do, where I want to play and everything. So, by not graduating early, it gives me more time to put those factors into play."

Martin was asked if he plans on taking an official visit to USC?

"Uh, definitely," said Martin when asked if he could be in Los Angeles one weekend this year for a visit. "It would be nice to be out there after the season and catch up with my bro,. Kevin Greene, after the season. He's red shirting this season, but he's a freak. He was known in the Bay area as a physical freak, and I want to be known as that guy.

Martin talked about Greene and what separates them as players.

"I'm a little bit more football savvy than he is," said Martin. "But he's coming along and his future is out of this world."

We asked when Martin would take his official visit to Notre Dame.

"Yes, I am taking my official visit for the SC game," said Martin who is adamant he his is committed to Notre Dame.

We'll have more from Martin after the Notre Dame/SC game. Top Stories
