USC maintains top spot in recruiting rankings

Student Sports continues its weekly recruiting ratings with the 29th installment of our weekly series, ranking the top 30 schools this week. Here are the up-to-date ratings of the top college football recruiting classes for the Class of 2003.

Ratings are based upon player evaluations made at Nike Football Camps and from game film study, plus verbals, offers, trips and calls.

The STUDENT SPORTS RECRUITING RACE will be updated every Thursday until signing day (last week's ranking in parentheses).

Prospects in bold indicate Students Sports Preseason Hot 100 selections.

1. USC (1)
The Trojans had been waiting all year to land All-American Woodland Hills (Calif.) Taft receiver Steve Smith and the talented athlete finally pulled the trigger earlier this week. Smith had been a Trojan lean since the beginning of the season but the longer things went, the more it appeared he wasn't the lock he was thought to be. With his commitment, it's going to be tough for any school to pass the Trojans in the Recruiting Race this year.

The Huskies surge into the rankings this week, as they added to an already outstanding receiver class with a pledge from Los Angeles (Calif.) Loyola WR/DB Quintin Daniels. Notre Dame stole one away from UNC this weekend, with the commitment of Hoover (Ala.) DB LaBrose Hedgemon, who had originally pledged the Tar Heels just last week. The 5-9, 180 pound corner has a ton of raw athletic ability, as evidenced by his 4.43 40 time and 37-inch vertical jump turned in at the Nike Camp in Alabama, and once he gets some intensive instruction at the college level, he could be quite a player.
