Q&A with Trojan verbal Ryan Watson

WeAreSC caught up with the newest Trojan commit, Ryan Watson, out of John Curtis Christian High School in Louisiana. The big defensive tackle prospect discusses his decision to attend USC.

WeAreSC- I heard you committed to USC.

Watson- "Yep."

WeAreSC- What coach did you tell and what was the reaction?

Watson- "I told Coach Orgeron today.  My coach told him.  He was really happy."

WeAreSC- I know that you've had it down to USC and LSU for awhile.  When did you realize that USC was the place for you?

Watson- "Actually, yesterday was really the day.  After going through all of the positives and negatives of each school, I decided on USC.  I got along with the coaches and players really well.  Coach Carroll was a main factor.  He's cool.  And Coach O.  I also feel the players and got along with everyone.  Shaun Cody, Kenechi Udeze, Mike Patterson, and basically the whole d-line.  I also like the academics.  I'm going to major in business."

WeAreSC- What kind of role did Coach Orgeron play in your decision?

Watson- "He played a definite role.  You know, he's from Louisiana and he can feel all of the things that I feel.  He's cool, and since he taught Warren Sapp, that's a major upside for SC.  Sapp was someone that I watched when I was younger and someone that I still watch.  I'm pretty big on that."

WeAreSC- What do you think it's going to be like playing for Coach Orgeron from what you know of him?

Watson- "I know he's pretty up-tempo.  I think that's going to be a challenge for me.  I know coming from a school, you know, my school is basically just like college, so it's not too different.  Plus we teach the same defense.  It's going to be a challenge but I'm ready for it."

WeAreSC- You brought up Coach Carroll. What are your thoughts on him?

Watson- "Coach Carroll, from what I know of him, he's a very outgoing person.  From what I've heard from the players, he'll do anything for the players and that's something I'm looking for.  That kind of interests me, knowing that he's a players coach.  When I went over to his breakfast that day, I mean, I met his wife and his son, and everything was perfect."

WeAreSC- I know that you also hit it off pretty well with your host, Alex Holmes.  Have you kept in contact with him since your visit?

Watson- "Yeah, actually I talked to Alex yesterday.  We talked about how he wanted me to come up there and he wanted me to come out and watch spring ball.  Just how everyone is waiting for me to come up there."

WeAreSC- What's your current height and weight and have the coaches talked to you about what kind of size they want you to come in at?

Watson- "I'm 6'3 and 290.  They haven't talked to me about what they want me to come in at, but I think we will get to that pretty soon."

WeAreSC- So what do you have going on for the rest of the school year?

Watson- "I'm in track.  I throw the shot-put."

WeAreSC- What are your plans for the summer?

Watson- "I'll probably come up to USC the beginning of June and practice and run with the team.  I think I'll stay up there for about a month and come back home for awhile, and then come back up for camp."

WeAreSC- Are you looking to make a mark right away as a freshman?

Watson- "Hopefully, yeah.  I know there's some players ahead of me but I hope I can get in the rotation a little."

WeAreSC- This year's recruiting class at USC is one of the top classes, if not the number one rated class in the entire country.  How does it feel to be a part of it and what are your expectations for the future?

Watson- "I mean that's really good.  I like the idea of having teammates that are top dog.  In the future, I expect a national championship from us."

WeAreSC- I know your teammate, Carnell Stewart, is still considering the Trojans.  Do you have any news on him?

Watson- "I think he's making a decision tonight when he comes in from his basketball game.  He's going to sit down with his mom and make a decision.  I know SC is a part of it.  Hopefully he leans toward SC, but you never know."

WeAreSC- Do you have anything else that you want to say to the Trojan fans out there?

Watson- "I'm very glad to be a Trojan."
