Is Westerman still interested in USC?

Christian Westerman from Hamilton High in Chandler, Ariz., came to USC's Rising Stars Camp last summer after his sophomore season and had one of the most impressive performances of all of the prospects who attended the camp. He was the top offensive lineman and he and Giovanni Di Poalo (USC 2010 signee) were the only two prep offensive linemen from the West Coast who had offers after the camp.

Christian Westerman from Hamilton High in Chandler, Ariz., came to USC's Rising Stars Camp last summer after his sophomore season and had one of the most impressive performances of all of the prospects who attended the camp. He was by far the top offensive lineman and he and Giovanni Di Poalo (USC 2010 signee) were the only two prep offensive linemen from the West Coast who had offers after the camp.

Westerman left USC with high interest in the Trojans, but a lot has happened since the June camp. Westerman's father, Chris Westerman, talked to SCPlaybook about how Pete Carroll leaving USC will impact his son's interest in the Trojans.

"That's the cool thing about Christian only being a junior, we can just sit back, at least for a little bit, and see what happens," said Chris Westerman about the coaching change at USC. "We're not upset or miffed about the coaching change. In fact, Brennan Carroll came by the school last month and came by a practice. Brennan had a chance to say hello to him and the visit meant a lot to Christian."

Although the Westerman's are familiar with USC, Chris Wetserman said they look forward to visiting USC again and meeting the new coaching staff.

"We're looking meet these guys and see what they are all about," said Chris Westerman. "We know Lane Kiffin coached the Oakland Raiders and at Tennessee, but we don't know that much about him as a person, because we have never met him. But it's all good.

"We definitely still plan on taking an official visit to USC when the time comes. They are still very high on our list, if not at the top of our list. It's been a dream of Christian's to be a part of that program for a long time. I said to one person, ‘USC was USC before Pete Carroll and it will be USC after Pete Carroll.' It's a tried and traditioned program, they've won 11 national championships and there's been years of Pac-10 annihilation, you know? Coach Carroll is a great guy, very charismatic and I wish him well, but he doesn't define SC."

We asked Chris Westerman if he thought Christian would commit before signing day?

"I don't know, but in talking to him and knowing, I would say more than likely," said Westerman. Just because it's such a long and tedious process, and after a while, it becomes a distraction. But there are times when he talkes about narrowing his list of schools to five or something like that and commit early. Then there are times when he talks about announcing at the Army Game. He already has invites to the Army and Under Armour Games, but I think he's going to play in the Army Game. It's been around longer and I think it's a little more prestigious."

Since the season ended in December, Westerman has been a workout warrior and working hard on his schoolwork.

"Christian is working his tail off right now and came home the other night and said he benched 415 lbs," said Westerman. "His strength coach said he thinks Christian will be able to bench 500 lbs. by the time he leaves high school. He‘s also working hard on studying for the SAT which he‘ll take in March. I don‘t think he‘ll have to worry about qualifying because he has a 3.5 GPA right now."

Scout.com will provide an update when Christian Westerman narrows his list of schools he's looking at to five.
