Quoting Kiffin: Sunday Scrimmage

USC head coach Lane Kiffin gives his thoughts on Sunday's 93-play scrimmage at Howard Jones Field.

Lane Kiffin on Sunday's scrimmage:

"On the positive side, to go 96 plays and have only one turnover – and that was by the third-string offense – I was pleased with that. From a defensive perspective, we've got to do a better job of getting the ball out.

"I thought Mitch continued to pick up where he left off in the spring scrimmages. ... I thought it was good to see some of the guys, maybe not the household names, making plays, especially Jordan Cameron, Rhett Ellison and David Ausberry.

"On defense, I thought we did well against the run. I thought our first-team defense did well. Our second-team secondary we've got to figure out, especially our corner spots."

Lane Kiffin when asked if Mustian is pushing Barkley for starting spot:

"Matt's the starter. I wouldn't say he's far, far ahead, which is a good thing. We don't want him to be far, far ahead. We want our backup to be able to go in. I feel right now on a game-plan sheet, I wouldn't have two game-plan sheets. Which is unusual. A lot of times with your backup quarterback you have another sheet because you can't do everything. I'm very excited about Mitch's performance again."

Lane Kiffin on the defense being ahead of the offense:

"They usually are. I have felt through the first week that the offense has really held their own more than normal. Usually going back over the years the beginning has been pretty defensive-dominant. It's hard to dominate not in pads, the first couple practices. The offense has done well holding their own, especially outside."

Lane Kiffin on tight end Jordan Cameron:

"He had a great offseason. He put on 11 or 12 pounds. He was up to 250 at one point; I don't know what he is today. He's really bought in to playing tight end. To be able to do stuff in the passing game, he's very used to doing (that) as a former receiver. He took off today. He'd been kind of quiet in the practices today but showed up again in the scrimmage."

Lane Kiffin on the young cornerbacks:

"Nickell is really pushing them (Harris and Harper) Nickell Robey showed up on some tackles today again. We kind of went after some corners today to see how they'd respond. It's very healthy competition."

Lane Kiffin on Curtis McNeal's punishing touchdown run:

"He had about three like that. He has shown up in scrimmages when it's live because he's so hard to bring down. It was good to see. He probably ran the most consistent of all the guys at first look."

Lane Kiffin was pleased with the play of USC's front seven on Sunday.
