Spring Ball Day 6

One former Trojan player who was at practice commented that spring ball practices are full of so much more teaching now than back when he played for McKay. In those days McKay used the spring to basically find out who the players were for the fall and that was it but now Carroll and other coaches fit so much into the schedule with teaching and putting in new things.

It was a shorts and shoulder pads practice as the Trojans prepare for a full pads practice tomorrow which will serve as the final workout before spring break.

There was a lot of work done early on special teams including punt coverage and kickoffs. This former player also offered his thoughts on the current QB battle based upon what he saw today at practice:

Matt Cassel - "best velocity and release of the group. Solid."
Brandon Hance - "low release and worrisome arm strength. The shoulder injury is obviously effecting his ability to perform at 100% but Chow wouldn't have brought him in unless he thought the guy could play."
Leinart - "strong arm on some plays but not so strong on others. He did a good job during drills."
Billy Hart - "Best feet of the group but baseball is a concern. Is he dedicated to football?"

A couple other player tidbits from the day:

Dominique Byrd - looked very smooth and runs well.
David Kirtman - Had a nice one-handed catch out of the backfield without breaking stride.
Justin Wyatt - He's been electrifying at times on offense with the only problem being a few too many drops so far but he made a terrific two-handed grab over the middle of a ball that was thrown a little high.
Matt Grootegoed - came into the backfield and nailed TB Darnell Bing for a 5 yard loss.
Hershel Dennis - put a move on Mike Patterson at the line of scrimmage which showed incredibly light feet and gained 20 yards before Melvin Simmons made the tackle.
Kyle Williams - he's back practicing after sitting out a couple days with a concussion. Kyle looks pretty good when healthy and could be a challenger to Fred Matua at RG.
Greig Carlson - the former Trojan player we mentioned above, who was a WR in his playing days, thought Carlson was very similar to Erik Affholter. He praised Greig's hands, ability to keep his eyes focused and square up his shoulders early before the ball arrives.
Lofa Tatupu - had a nice pick of a Matt Cassel pass near the goal line.
Marcell Allmond - blocked a field goal attempt
Kevin Arbet - sat out the last part of practice with ice on his ankle.

Several members of the Los Alamitos Griffins are scheduled to visit practice tomorrow.
