Mountain West Elite Standouts

Lyric Bartley, Simian Matagi and Sione Finau were even more impressive in person. Recap of Mountain West elite camp.

The Mountain West Elite camp is growing in popularity and now draws some of the best players in Utah. This was my first experience at MWE. The way I would describe it is All Poly except only Utah players and no college coaches. It's actually refreshing. I could actually see players take reps and it wasn't quite so overwhelming.

So who really stood out to me was Lyric Bartley, Simian Matagi and Sione Finau. I also saw a lot of potential in Mason Tye and Jordan Lolohea who is a 2017 recruit from West HS.

I tracked Lyric down after and he talked about the camp and recruiting. "I am getting interest from Nevada (offer), Wyoming, Utah State and Utah. I am planning on going to All Poly camp and a few other camps."

Lyric has thrust into a starting QB role last year because of an injury to the starter. He played both ways and his JR tape was good but in person he impressed. I left having no doubt he is at least a Mountain West level DE. So what does he think about Utah State?

"I connect really well with Coach Malloe. He is from the same island in Hawaii as my family. We are from Hawaii. I really like Utah State hope I get an offer from them."

Lyric is a sign and send Mission guy and that could help his development even more.

Simian Matagi really proved he has the "Football IQ and play-making experience" that you want in a LB. He is really lean right now but I have a feeling in a couple years that would not be a problem. What I wanted to see from Simian was not just athleticism that shows on tape but the knowledge and skill as well.

Sione Finau was a standout at WR on Saturday. He may end up as a nickle, safety or even RB but he showed the quickness and shiftiness that was so far and away better than anyone at this camp. He will have a big season for Kearns.

A guy that was another skill guy is Julian Blackmon. He also looked better than I thought he would and I left impressed.

Mason Tye impressed just based on his solid base and powerful lower body explosion. The Sky View Defensive line of Max Christensen, Colton Durrant and Jake PItcher is really impressive. I know they have a QB that can play (Garrison Beach). Hopefully they have some other pieces to make a run this year.

Jordan Lolohea is playing LB and TE right now. He screams a guy that could move to the line after serving a mission and just be a complete beast at the next level.

The two standouts at Quarterback are 2016 Garrison Beach and 2017 Tayler Katoa. Both are guys that I think will play well in college somewhere. Tayler has an offer from Utah State.
