5 Minutes With Tevita Bloomfield

The local linebacker gives us his thoughts on why he chose the U, his dad playing at BYU, greyshirting, and more...

How did your senior season pan out?

As a team we had a rough season. We had some ups and downs. We lost to Bingham in the first round of the playoffs. As an individual, I didn't do as good as I did my junior year.

What positions did you play this past season?

I played inside linebacker and running back.

You committed to Utah over the summer. Were you offered at their camp and did you commit right away?

I was offered at their camp and committed right away.

So why did you pick Utah?

I picked Utah because I love their linemen up there. The coaching staff, the players in general, and it's close to home. It felt like I was already home at camp when I was up there.

Were you a Utah fan growing up?

My dad played for BYU for so I was pretty split on Utah and BYU growing up.

With Utah going to the Pac 12, was that a big influence on your decision?

Not really. I would have still committed if they were in the Mountain West.

Do you have any other offers and are there any schools that were talking to you?

I was offered by Utah State. UCLA was talking to me and Oregon State, and that's it, but I cut off all ties.

Are you planning on taking a mission at some point?

That's still up in the air.

What was the most important thing to you in regards to Utah when you made that final decision to commit to the Utes?

I was brought up as a linebacker and I was very focused on the defensive coaching staff. The defensive coordinator (Kalani Sitake) is related to me. He went to BYU with my dad so he made me feel pretty much at home.

Have the coaches talked to you about coming in and having a chance to play right away or will you be redshirting?

I'm actually going to greyshirt. I'm going to go to school for a semester, but I'll have all my five years.

Are you close to any of the other commits to Utah?

I know a lot of Utah commits. Seni Fauonuku and I have known each other for a long time.

Coming in as a linebacker, how do you think you'll fit into that defense and what Kalani Sitake likes to do at that position?

I think I'll fit in as a downhill run stopper. I have a nose for the ball and my lateral movement is pretty good.

With your size, if the coaches wanted to turn you into a defensive end, is that something you'd be open to?

Whatever they want me to play, I'll play.

Is there anything that could change your mind between now and signing day and send you to another school?

No. I'm set in my decision.
