Mike Gesell is one of the top point guards in the 2012 class and comes in at No. 93 in the latest update of Scout.com's top-100 2012 prospects. On Tuesday he spoke about his latest offer and interest he is receiving as well as talking about his recruitment process.
"My latest offer came from Stanford just recently when I was out in Los Angeles and since I was out West I made the trip to visit the school", Gesell said. "I really like their style of play and their campus is amazing."
Gesell has received interest from Virginia, Harvard and Boston College, but he is hoping to land more offers during the July evaluation period which runs from July 6-15 and then again from July 22-31. "My club team is heading to the Peach Jam tournament in Atlanta as well as to a tournament in Orlando, so I am hoping to perform well there and get some more offers."
In addition to the new offers, Gesell also has offers from Utah, Nebraska, Iowa, Iowa State, Creighton, Drake, and Northern Iowa. The only schools he has visited were Iowa, Stanford and Nebraska, but come the fall he wants to make some decisions about what schools he will take official visits to.
"Right now I do not have a top list of schools and I am not leaning to any certain programs right now. I have not narrowed my list down from the offers that I have received." Gesell also said that he will be making decisions about his official visits later this summer.
We also talked about his offer to Utah. Gesell was first recruited by Jim Boylen and his offer was still open when Larry Krystkowiak became the new head coach for the Utes. Gesell has spoken to Krystkowiak a few times and that is also who has been primarily recruiting him. Gesell seemed impressed when he talked about Krystkowiak, "coach seems like a real nice guy and he talked about his time playing and coaching in the (NBA) league and how he can prepare me for the league since he knows what it takes."
Style of play and finding the right fit with a program is his top priority in where Gesell wants to play basketball, and he did say that Utah is a school that does fit those categories. When I asked him about when he would make a decision, Gessel said he was not sure and that he is in no hurry to make a decision.
