Brief Glance at the 2011 Utes

The Utes are moving up in competition with their entry into the Pac 12, but have the front line talent to challenge for the South division crown. Here's an initial look.

Utah Utes

Last Season's Record: 10-3

Returning Starters/Letterwinners: 13/51

Key Losses:

Matt Asiata RB- Rushed for over 1700 yards and 24 touchdowns in career at Utah.

Brandon Burton DB- 18 career pass break-ups and 3 interceptions. 2nd Team All Mountain West Conference performer in 2010. Blocked potential game-winning field goal on final play against rival BYU in 2010. Early entry into NLF draft. Drafted by Minnesota Vikings.

Zane Taylor C- Started 38 games at center. Three time All Mountain West Conference selection including 1st team in 2010.

Key Returnees:

Jr. Jordan Wynn QB- 11-4 as a starter over two seasons. Threw for 2334 yards with 17 Touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 2010 despite missing 3 games due to injury.

Jr. Devonte Christopher WR- 39 receptions for 660 yards and 6 touchdowns in 2010. All Mountain West Conference selection. A threat to score every time he touches the ball.

Jr. Star Lotulelei DT- Linebacker Brian Blechen may get the headlines on defense, but Lotulelei makes the Ute defense go. Stout against the run, and with a quick first step getting into the backfield, Star is going to be a household name around the Pac 12 quickly.

Best Game: September 10, @ USC (Pac 12 opener)

Projected Finish: 9-3 (7-2)

Utah ventures off into new territory as a member of the elite in the Pac 12. How they respond week to week over a 12 game season, with the physical toll a BCS schedule will impose on them, is still unknown. The front-line talent is as good as any in the South division, but the depth and lack of experience in the secondary and at running back could be their downfall. The Pac 12 opener at USC is going to be a measuring stick game that could propel the Utes to a division title and a spot in the inaugural conference championship game or send them spiraling towards a .500 season.
