Villanueva Picks Up Utah Offer

Fernandon Villanueva picked up his fourth offer, this one from Utah, and plans on visiting officially...

San Jose (CA) Independence two way lineman Fernando Villanueva believes he's flying under the radar, but is hoping a big start to his senior year will see an increase in interest from colleges all over the country.

"It's been kind of slow the last couple of months. It finally started picking up again a couple of weeks ago. I've been kind of low key while a lot of schools are waiting on my grades. I've just been working hard to get in touch with a lot of coaches. I'm not out there like a lot of players like a guy like Jordan Simmons. I'm under the radar."

Villanueva picked up an offer last week after speaking with Utah offensive line coach Tim Davis and is intent on visiting officially in the fall.

"I gave him a call and he said he wanted to offer me a scholarship. Every since then we've been talking. He said he's looking for me to play as a freshman. He doesn't want to redshirt me. I might have to redshirt if I choose Utah, and I'll do that if I have to, but he wants me to get on the field as soon as he can. I think Utah is great. I like their D a lot. I don't know if I want to play offensive or defense, but where Coach Davis wants me is as an offensive lineman. He said that's where the money is at and if I can get to the NFL, I can last longer in the league there. Maybe I can make the switch later on if O-line doesn't work, but that's where he wants me."

While still waiting for more offers, the lineman says the Utes are in a good spot for his services and he will be visiting officially.

"They're up there. I can't wait to go on my official out there. I haven't decided where else I want to go yet for visits, but Utah is one place I'm going to go. I'm still waiting for a few other offers before I decide who else I'm going to visit."

Not wanting the process to drag out too far into his senior year, Villanueva will be taking early visits with a mid fall commitment.

"I'm hoping to take all of my visits in September and October and then make a decision."

With his grades keeping some schools from offering, Villanueva attended school over the summer to boost his GPA.

"I went to summer school and I raised up my GPA drastically. I live down the street from San Jose State so I'm getting a lot of help from their counselors who are helping me choose the best classes to make sure they I qualify. Now I'm fired up to get my senior year started."

Villanueva also reports offers from three other schools with another on the verge.

"I've also been offered by Washington State, Utah State, and San Jose State, Fresno State is just waiting on my transcripts."
