Vainuku Makes It Quick

Salt Lake City (UT) East DT Vaha Vainuku commits to Utah shortly after receiving the coveted offer...

It took awhile, but local defensive lineman Vaha Vainuku is finally right where he wants to be after committing to Utah on New Year's Eve.

"Utah offered last week. I wanted to committ earlier, but I didn't want to distract them while they prepared for their bowl game, so I waited until after the game and then I committed."

Vainuku, who also had offers from Utah State, Weber State, and Washington State, cancelled three official visits to Logan, Ogden, and another one scheduled for the 14th at BYU, to pave the way to join Kyle Whittingham's team.

"The coaches asked me if I was still interested in Utah and if I'd cancel my official visits and come to Utah and I had an offer. I said I'd talk it over with my parents and let them know, so now I won't be taking those visits. I'll just be visiting Utah on January 20th."

Vainuku, who plays at East High School, about a mile from Utah's campus, grew up a BYU fan, but living so close to the U and having friends and family always talking about the Utes has changed his allegiance.

"Utah just seemed like the right place for me. Everyone always talks about Utah and it's a really good school. I already talked to the coaches at BYU and told them I wasn't coming there."

The big defensive lineman, who played on both sides of the ball as a prepster, will be brought in at the defensive tackle spot, but Ute fans won't see him on the field for awhile due to an upcoming mission.

"I was supposed to go on my mission in October, but they're trying to move it up so I can go over the summer instead."

Vainuku is the 18th verbal commit in the 2012 class for the Utes.
