Cottonwood High quarterback Cooper Bateman may get all the attention during the upcoming 2012 Utah high school football season, but there may not be anyone that does more for his team in the state than Woods Cross' Sean Barton.
Barton has seen his recruitment pick up recently with four offers to his name and others maintaining consistent contact.
"I have four offers right now from Utah, BYU, Utah State, and Stanford. I'm also talking to UCLA a lot, Oregon State, Georgia Tech, Ohio State, Michigan, and a few others."
He's hesitant to name a leader, but the 6-2, 205 pounder did grow up as a fan of one of the local schools that has offered.
"No schools standing out, but I love the Utes. I've actually been a Utah fan since I was a littel kid. They contacted me first. I love the coaching staff and the players. I love all these schools, but I really love the Utes."
Barton, who plays running back and linebacker at Woods Cross, is receiving most of his interest on the defensive side of the ball.
"Most schools want me as at strong safety or outside linebacker. To be honest, I just want to play. I like defense a lot. I'd say I like defense more than offense, but I'll play anywhere."
With more offers surely to follow, Barton may look to stay close to home when making his decision.
"I'm looking for good academics. Football ends eventually. I'm looking into how they've been the past few years, but I want to go to a school with a good football tradition. Good coaches as well. I'd also like to play close to home."
Despite being a Utah fan, Barton doesn't give the Utes and edge over any other team at the moment.
"It doesn't give them a edge. I just want to best fit for me, whether that's Utah, BYU, or someone else."
Barton has been in constant contact with Utah defensive coordinator Kalani Sitake, and the two have discussed which position Utah would like him at.
"Kalani Sitake has been recruiting me and talking to me a lot. They are looking at me as an oustide backer mostly, but it depends on how much weight I can put on."
Barton has a busy spring and summer lined up with multiple campus visits, hoping to get a better idea of what each school can offer so he can make a decision before his senior year starts.
"I've got lots of trips scheduled for the spring. I'm heading up to Ohio State and Michigan to check out their campuses. I'll be at Stanford's junior day as well as Utah's and BYU's. I want to be committed before my senior year starts, so probably late summer for my decision."
