Jones Can Fly

Redlands (CA) football and track star Walter Jones has four offers

Salt Lake City is no stranger to Olympians, having hosted the Winter Games in 2002. If the Utes land 2013 athlete Walter Jones, they may have a future Summer Olympian on their roster.

"My recruitment is really getting better and I'm starting get offers, although I've been trying to focus on my track season."

Jones competes in the 100, 200, long jump and triple jump for High School . He has posted times of 10.67 in the 100 and 21.56 in the 200, but his future may be in the long jump where he's posted a personal best of well over 24 feet. "The Olympic Trial standard is 25-8 and I'm hoping to get up to 26 my senior year."

Once track is over, the 6-1, 173 pounder two-way player will shift his focus back to football and adding to his offer total.

"So far I've received offers from Utah, Washington State, Oregon State, and Nevada. I'm also hearing a lot from Eastern Washington, Houston, and UCLA."

With the Utes jumping into the mix recently, Jones has been learning more about the program while developing a relationship with cornerbacks coach, Sharief Shah.

"Utah offered me a couple of weeks ago. I really like their program. I was at their game when they played USC last year and was really impressed with how they play. I really like Coach Shah as well. He's a really chill guy and I think he understands me pretty well. I'd definitely like to take a visit out there. Not sure if I'll be able to, but it's something I'd like to do."

With some of the top speed in the country, Jones could end up on either side of the ball.

"Utah is recruiting me as a DB, but most schools are recruiting me as an athlete. I prefer playing on offense, but it really doesn't matter to me. I'll play anywhere." The Utes move to the Pac 12 will definitely be advantageous if they want to land Jones, who is setting his sights on playing in a big conference.

"I'm looking for a school with a good education, a good football program, and a school in a good conference like the Pac 12. I'm probably going to wait until signing day to make a decision."
