Utah has their man. El Toro (CA) quarterback Conner Manning gave the Utes a verbal commitment while visiting Tuesday, bring the Utes total of commits for the 2013 class to 7.
"Monday I toured the campus and facilities and met all of the coaches except for Whittingham and Johnson. Today I talked to Coach Johnson and Coach Whitt and spent a lot of time with them. I just loved it here."
Manning's commitment seemed inevitable over the last few weeks, and he was getting the same feeling heading into the day.
"I knew coming into today that I wanted to commit but I just wanted to meet them and make sure. I just know that they're both good guys.
Manning's meeting with Coach Whittingham went a long ways towards cementing his place as a future Utah quarterback.
"He cares a lot about his players and getting degrees. That's very important to him. He's a real straightforward guy. Made me feel like home. We were talking for awhile and he asked how recruiting was going and I told him that I wanted to commit. He was very happy to have me."
Now Manning will get to learn from Utah legend and offensive coordinator Brian Johnson, who he is very excited to be tutored by.
"Coach Johnson is a really good guy and feel like I should have a great experience learning from him. He's close in age to me so he understands us well and knows how we are."
Despite Johnson being in his first year as a coordinator, Manning was not scared off and believes that the two of them can grow together and that Johnson has a lot to give to a young and developing quarterback.
"I have no concerns about his experience. He was one of the best QBs to go to Utah. He has turned the QB position around and is a great coach."
With his commitment out of the way, Manning will now focus on his senior year and trying to get other recruits on board at Utah as well.
"I'm just going to be focusing on my school and my team and get ready for the upcoming season. I'll be spreading the word the word about Utah. There are definitely some guys that I'll be working on."
Manning also has looked into enrolling early and is working on a plan that will allow him to do so in time for spring ball in 2013.
"We're still looking into enrolling early and seeing what I have to do. It's still a possibility but I'm still not sure."
