It's still early in the recruiting game for Amone Finau but the Kearns (UT) 2014 multi-purpose player has already picked his school.
Utah received a commitment from Finau on June 18th and he says although he knows it's early in the process, he feels it's the place for him.
"It felt like the right place. It's way close to my home and my family. Family is real important; I want my family to be there wherever I go."
Finau has family on the team as he's related to current Utah center Tevita Stevens and Ute running back Harvey Langi. This family connection was one of the links that helped Utah secure his commitment.
Finau has been recruited by Coach Ilaisa Tuiaki, who invited Finau up to the school this past weekend for an unofficial visit. While there he showed some pretty impressive numbers that will translate into the final position he's asked to play on the field.
"I just met with Coach (Tuiaki) over the weekend. He watched me work out and took some numbers on me. I measured at 6 foot 3 and my weight is 190. My 40 time is 4.4. I play running back right now and the U offered me as a running back. The coaches said they would try me out at outside linebacker too."
Although his junior year at Kearns hasn't begun yet Finau has still managed to receive a number of offers, a list that is sure to grow over the coming months as the new high school season begins.
"Right now I have offers from SUU, Weber, Utah State, and Utah. Tulsa has been talking to me too, but they want me at wide receiver."
Even though he's only a junior, Finau says he's always had his eyes on the in-state schools - Utah in particular.
"I've never really thought about playing outside of the state. I'd have a hard time if my family couldn't watch me. I really like Utah; I've watched them since I was little. It's a good school and I'm excited. It's a really good program. Playing in the Pac-12 at that high level of competition was a selling point too."
With high school football in Utah set to begin in just a few weeks Finau is glad to know he has his decision behind him. He understands that he still has a lot of time before his recruiting is over and doesn't want to rule any options out, but in the end he says his commitment to Utah is solid.
"I'm going to take other school's offers as they come and consider everything because I know [there's a long way to go], but overall it's pretty solid."
