Dale ‘DJ' Dean, a 5-foot-11 180 lb cornerback out of Newton, Texas, committed to the Ute coaching staff Thursday evening making him the newest member of Utah's 2013 recruiting class. Utah has made a habit of recruiting Texas defenders as Dean joins a list of current Utah defensive backs Terrell Reese, Eric Rowe, Wykie Freeman, Justin Thomas, and others who hail from the Lone Star State.
Dean has been in touch with the Utah coaching staff for a few months now. Morgan Scalley originally reached out to him back in May and has developed a great relationship with him as they've discussed Utah's educational opportunities and his potential football career. Dean has maintained throughout his recruitment that education was a top priority; something he says helped him as he made his final decision.
"The number one reason I committed is their academic program. They have one of the top programs [Sports Medicine] that I want to go for and I feel like it's a great opportunity for me. Then the coaches, they treat me like a son and that's what you need going into college because your parents aren't going to be there for you and you need somebody who will watch over you. With Coach Scalley, I talk to him just about every week. He's been down a few times and watched me work out. He's done a good job of staying in contact and I really like that."
On the field, Dean considers himself a natural, vocal leader who prides himself in his defense and says his strength is his ability to play in man coverage. Despite his experience playing on both sides of the ball (he is a standout at the quarterback position) Dean says he knows he's coming to Utah to play corner and he's excited for the opportunity.
"The coaches told me I'll be playing corner and I'm excited. After I committed the coaches didn't give me anything in particular to work on but I've been working real hard on my own."
Dean took an unofficial visit to Utah back in April and was able to catch their Red-White spring scrimmage. While he was on campus he met some of Utah's current players including Brian Blechen, Eric Rowe, and Victor Spikes and says he was able to quickly develop a friendship with those players. Now that his decision is made he says he's planning a second trip, this time to catch a live game this season.
"I went on an unofficial visit to [Utah's] spring game. I don't know any of the current players personally but while I was out there I met Brian Blechen, Eric Rowe, and Victor Spikes and they were really cool. I'm hoping to take an official to one of the games this year. I really want to go to the USC game on October 4th so that's what I'm hoping for."
Dean's commitment is the second the Utes have received from a Texas player and the first from a cornerback in this class. He chose Utah over offers from North Texas, Tulane, Illinois, and Washington State and says no matter who comes calling his commitment to Utah is solid.
"If other schools call or offer I'll take a look into their program but I'm committed to Utah."
