3 days ago, Utah was without a wide receiver commit for the 2013 class. Now they have two after Xaver Shepherd committed over the weekend and now Diablo Valley (CA( JC's Andre Lewis pulled the trigger Monday.
"I was talking to my family about it and I wanted to make the right decision. Utah was the school that kept coming up. I feel really comfortable with the coaching staff like Coach Tuiaki and the head coach. The coaching staff really made me feel like I was already a part of the team."
The draw of the rabid Ute fans and an academic major that is in line with Lewis' ambitions also helped seal the deal.
"They're in a great location in Salt Lake City and their fans are always going crazy. The coaches stressed academics a lot and getting my degree. They want to help set me up beyond just football. Utah has a great petroleum engineering program, so having my major was also a big plus."
Lewis also reports offers from Arizona State, Arkansas, Nevada, Texas Tech, Louisiana Tech, and Fresno State, but felt that Utah was the best fit and is excited to bring his skills to the program.
"I feel like I can really stretch the field. I've got good speed and feet. I can be a 3rd down or 4th down and long kind of guy that they can really count on to get that first down. They run the spread and that's every wide receiver's dream offensive. You have to make blocks, but they're usually going to be passing the ball."
The 6-4, 210 pounder has never visited Salt Lake City, but plans on doing so in the coming months before working to get on campus early.
"I haven't visited Utah before, but I'll probably make an official out there in October. I'm a 3 to play 2 guy and am looking to be on campus in December or January so I can get on the field in spring."
Ultimately, the draw of the Pac 12 and to be able to play somewhere that isn't too far from home was big for Lewis and helped put the Utes over the top for his services.
"Them being in the Pac 12 is huge, and a big accomplishment for me to be able to play in that conference. My brother went to the SEC, but Salt Lake City is only 6 hours away from home and everyone wants to play in the Pac 12."
