Utah has had succes with their Hawaiin pipeline over the years, and hopes to continue that with the 2013 class and defensive lineman Kamalei Correa. Correa visited Salt Lake City over the weekend and was blown away by the experience.
"It was great. More than awesome. Definitely one of the best experiences I've had in my life away from the Islands."
The relationships he built with the coaches, players, and people he met played a big part in his enjoyment.
"I loved the coaching staff. They're great people and so are the players. Everyone out there was really nice and talked a lot about family."
The lopsided Utah victory and the entire game day experience were standouts for the future linebacker/defensive end.
"The game experience really caught my eye. It was the first Pac 12 game I've ever experienced. All of the fans were diehards with their flags on their cars and the tailgating before the game. The student section never sat down for the the entire game."
Correa was ushered about campus by another islander in linebacker V.J. Fehoko.
"It was great being hosted by VJ. I've known him for awhile so I was comfortable around him and was able to ask a lot of questions about the school and the program."
Correa was very impressed with the family culture that Utah breeds and relies so heavily on to make them a successful program.
"The family atmosphere stood out a lot. Coach Whittingham talks a lot about family and his motto is really family first."
With his first trip over, the 6-3, 235 pounder has one more setup and will likely make his decision in the next couple of weeks.
"I'll be taking a trip to Boise State in two weeks and am still debating on trips to Arizona State and Oregon State, but will probably decide between Utah and Boise after the next visit. Utah only has a couple of spots left so if I want to go there, I'll need to commit soon."
With that decision looming, the Utes have jumped to the top of the list for Correa based on the visit.
"I would say that Utah is at the top. They showed me everything I need to succeed as a student and an athlete."
