Game Review: Arizona at Utah

The Utes struggle to stop Arizona's ground attack and lose their final home game of the season

The Utes will not make it to a bowl game for the first time since the year 2002 snapping a 9 year bowl-eligible streak.

The Utes once again had trouble containing a mobile quarterback. What has hurt them all season long has been the ability to stop quarterbacks from gaining the crucial third downs with their feet, and gaining large chunks of yards on the ground. Matt Scott ended the game with 78 yards rushing and a touchdown. Scott was also 12-27 and threw for 160 yards and a touchdown.

Travis Wilson threw for a career high 311 yards (28-40) with 2 touchdowns and no interceptions. Though the stats may look ok, there were a lot of mental mistakes by Wilson in this game. Wilson seemed rushed on a lot of his throws and forced a good amount of those balls to covered receivers. Overall, Wilson is still making freshman mistakes that experience will fix.

Devonte Christopher scored his first touchdown since the USC game and led the Utes with three catches for 84 yards. After get minimal playing time in that past couple of games, Christopher came out on senior night and had a solid outing. He seemed very at lost for words during the postgame conference and took this loss to heart. Eliminating your bowl eligibility on senior night is not the way any of these seniors wanted to go out.

Though John White did pass the century mark ending the game with 112 yards on 27 carries, that "magical" number of 100 yards for White equals a win has not been so magical anymore with these last 2 losses. It was White's 13th career 100-yard rushing game.

Eric Rowe had a career-high 16 tackles, which was the highest single-game total by a Ute since 2010 when Matt Martinez had 17 vs. BYU. Rowe had a few huge open field tackles this game, two of which very well could have gone for touchdowns if Rowe hadn't made them.

Utah records it's 18th straight sellout with the attendance of 45.031.

The story of the game was Ka'Deem Carey. Carey gained 204 yards on 26 carries and a touchdown, averaging 7.8 yards a carry. Carey ran right through and around Utah's defense the majority of the night. It didn't seem to matter if Carey ran between the tackles or bounced it outside, he was successful in pretty much anything he tried against the Utes defense.

The tempo Arizona's offense was running really gave Utah's defense some trouble. Whittingham acknowledged this by opening up his postgame conference by stating "The tempo and schematics of it all are very good." The defense seemed lost after a few plays and weren't able to recover due to the tempo Arizona offense was throwing at them. Whittingham noted that the fake field goal wasn't a chance but in fact a "gimme". He said that they had seen something in the way Arizona had set up for field goal blocks the entire season and knew they could exploit it with the fake field goal. Coleman Peterson stated "the team has a fake installed every week and that Sean Sellwood had a perfect throw and things worked out".
