Monte Kiffin, the Trojans' defensive coordinator and father of USC head coach Lane Kiffin, came under fire this season as the Trojans approached their 7-5 record. The five losses all heavily blamed on USC's defense, including an upset at Arizona, allowing Oregon's offense to put up historical numbers in the Coliseum, and then again with poor defensive performances in the losses to UCLA and Notre Dame.
"Things didn't always go as well as we would have liked this year from a defensive and win-loss standpoint," Monte Kiffin said in a school press release. "I will leave USC with the utmost respect for the University, the Trojan Family and, most importantly, the players I had the good fortune to coach."
Monte Kiffin coached at USC the past three seasons under his son.
"I respect my father's decision and his desire to return to the NFL," Lane Kiffin said. "We are very appreciative of the hard work and effort that he put in at USC."
