ASU slips past Utah in overtime 54-55

ASU slips past Utah in overtime 54-55. Jason Washburn with a career game.

The Runnin' Utes suffer a 54-55 overtime loss to Arizona State in Tempe.

In the first Pac-12 game of the season for Utah, the Utes traveled to Tempe, Arizona to take on the Arizona State Sun Devils. Looking to start out conference-play with a victory, the Utes played a very tough game against the Sun Devils but fell just short losing by 1 point in overtime.

In a game where neither team could build a substantial lead at any point of the game, senior Jason Washburn had a career game finishing with 19 points, 18 rebounds, and 4 blocks. Not only doing a great job on offense, Wash did a good job defending ASU's Jordan Bachynski, (Dallin Bachynski's older brother) who is a very good center for the Sun Devils. Wash had a number of excellent moves down low on Bachynski who is normally a very good defender. With the play of Washburn really heating up as of late, teams will have to focus on Washburn which will really open things up for Utah's wings. If he can keep up anything near this kind of performance, it will work wonders for this Utah team.

Outside of Washburn, Utah struggled shooting the ball tonight finishing 20-58 (34.5%) from the field and 3-11 (27.3%) from beyond the arch. The shot selection wasn't the greatest tonight. Too many times the Utes found themselves with the shot clock running down and having to throw up poor shots throughout the game.

The bench for the Utes did not have a good outing. Though Cedric Martin was the only player off the bench to get a good amount of playing time, the bench just couldn't get anything going when their numbers were called on. The defense was very disappointing by the bench, as they let ASU run right past them a number of times which lead to multiple easy buckets for the Sun Devils. Though a tough outing by the bench this game, I do not believe this is something that will continue throughout the season. I am normally quiet pleased with the contribution that comes from the bench. While they will most certainly look to brush this one off and come out strong next game, Arizona will be quite the opponent to try and do so against.

The Utes (8-5, 0-1 Pac-12) will take on the #3 ranked Arizona Wildcats on Saturday, January 5th at the Mckale Center in Tucson, Arizona.
