In a roller coaster game, the Utes fail to put together a Pac-12 winning streak after the win against Washington.
The Utes came out playing very sloppy basketball and just couldn't recover from the early mistakes. With 15 turnovers in the first half compared to Cal's 5, the Utes just couldn't get in a rhythm and make up for the turnovers. While the shooting wasn't great, the defense couldn't do much either. Though Cal did only go 23 of 56 (41.1%) from the field, the Bears were missing easy shots all game long and very easily could have shot at least 50% for the game.
The story of the game for Cal, NBA bound Allen Crabbe. Crabbe was able to put up another night of impressive numbers. He finished with 23 points going 4 of 6 from beyond the arch, and added 5 boards. Utah just didn't have an answer for Crabbe and simply lacked the star power needed going up against a player like that.
After an impressive showing in Seattle against a good Washington team, the Utes were unable to back that performance up against the Cal Bears. Consistency has hurt this Utah team all season long. Of course the turnovers are always going to hurt, but there is still a lot more for the Utes to improve on. This team still lacks a "go to guy" which is crucial for a teams success. Though there are some players who could be that guy for this team, they just haven't been able to prove themselves in crucial situations. Whether or not that player will emerge this season is unknown, but it would certainly help this team out a lot especially in games that come down to the wire.
Other than the turnovers, freshman Brandon Taylor continued to prove himself as a guard who can come in and deliver for this team. Taylor finished with 10 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds. Jason Washburn finished with 14 points and 7 rebounds but shot just 5 of 13 from the field. Though the box score doesn't reflect it, Cedric Martin continues to play a big role for this team and had another good game tonight.
Utah's next game will be against Stanford on Sunday at the Huntsman Center.
Utes fall to Cal 57-62
