Utah Gets To Jenkins First

Florida athlete Juan Jenkins is sporting his first offer from Utah

WIth Dennis Erickson now on board, the expectation is for Utah to have a bigger national presence when it comes to recruiting. One area they're still trying to tap is the goldmine that is the state of Florida and they're starting with Gainesville High School in the backyard of the Florida Gators.

Utah has offered three players from Gainesville including athlete Juan Jenkins, who is holding just the one offer from Utah.

"My recruitment, it's going good so far. Just taking it all in. Utah is the only school that has offered me, but I'm talking to a bunch of other schools like Kentucky, Central Florida, and South Carolina."

While Utah hasn't landed a preps recruit out of the Sunshine State in some time, and no current players hail from Florida, the Utah coaching staff knows that making in-roads in arguably the top state at producing D1 talent is a must and guys like Jenkins are a necessity.

"I really love the program. I love what they're trying to do. The defensive is great with the different packages and different blitzing packages."

While Jenkins has never visited Utah, his parents are very supportive of him taking a trip and leaving the state of Florida if that's what he wants to do and that's what suits him best.

"My dad said that I've got to do what I've got to do to get my education and find a school that fits me so I can major in engineering."

The 6-0, 195 pounder could end up as either a safety or linebacker, but Utah has offered him as a safety, hoping he can add some athleticism to the defensive backfield.

"They want me as a safety. Some schools want me at linebacker, but I'll play whatever position the coaches need me to play."

Jenkins is putting a lot of emphasis on facilities, something that will help with Utah's current construction projects, and the chance to play right away.

"The coaching staff, the facilities, and the depth chart are most important to me. I want to be able to come in early and play."

With only one offer on the table, Jenkins isn't planning on committing for a couple of months, and has a busy summer lined up to garner more interest.

"I'd like to decide at some point over the summer and get the decision out of the way, but the next couple of months I'll be headed to Florida State and Florida camps."
