Utes Roll past UC Davis 94-60
Utah had its most impressive performance of this young season as they defeated UC Davis. Utah simply did what it was supposed to do on Friday night and put this game away pretty early. The Utes jumped out to a 15-2 lead by playing good defense and playing an up-tempo offense. UC Davis made a run and got to within five points late in the first half. Utah may have crumbled and panicked last year, but last night they switched into another gear and broke the game open again. Every time they got a rebound, it seemed like they were on a fast break and scoring easy buckets. The opponent wasn't all that great, but it was refreshing to see Utah play well even if it wasn't their best game. Sophomore stud Jordan Loveridge was held scoreless in the first half and yet the Utes still led by 16 going into the break, the Utes would have been in trouble if that happened last year. Loveridge did end up having 11 points, 15 rebounds and 5 assists. Jordan had a huge impact on the game without scoreing a whole lot. That is a great sign for Utah.
Renan Lenz had his best game as a Ute as he dropped a career high 20 points. He also added 6 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 assists. If he can continue to play this well, he will be a dangerous weapon for the Utes. Brandon Taylor has really improved at his time at Utah. He struggled to get playing time at the beginning of last year and towards the end of the year, was a key player for Utah. His game has grown so much and he now has the ability to take over a game. Taylor finished last night with 21 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds and a steal. Delon Wright finished with 12 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 blocks.
If you haven't made it to the Huntsman Center to see the Runnin' Utes play I strongly suggest that you get there. This team is talented, fun to watch and will win a lot of games this year. Utah's next test will be against Grand Canyon on Thursday in the Global Sports Hoops Showcase held at the Huntsman Center.
