2013 Position Review: Wide Receiver

It was a mixed bag for the Utah wide receivers in 2013

It didn't work out as they planned. Kenneth Scott's injury in the first game of the season threw a big wrench into the plans of the Utah receiving corps and offense. Scott was counted on to be the top weapon outside. Instead, everything fell on Dres Anderson who had a great season with 53 catches, 1,002 yards, and 7 touchdowns. Anderson's big play ability was a huge boost to an offense that would have been dead in the water without him.

But, that was pretty much it. Sean Fitzgerald was admirable replacing Scott, but not nearly the threat the Utes needed. Anthony Denham was a solid blocker throughout the season, but never had much of an impact catching the ball. Geoff Norwood, Dominique Hatfield. Not much production.

Then the drops. Drops, tips, rebounds, hurricanes. We saw it over and over from Utah receivers in 2013, with many of those coming from Dres Anderson. It got to the point where you almost were surprised anytime a Utah receiver caught the ball, instead of the ball being tipped up in the air and picked off by an opposing defense. Two players and it's an anommoly. Pretty much every receiver on the roster and that's on the coaches.

Injuries derailed the tight ends as well. Jake Murphy didn't have the early season production many had hoped, but that was mostly due to opposing defenses keying on him. Murphy's injury in the middle of the season seemed to coincide with Utah's drastic drop in offensive production. When he returned, Jake became the top target on the team, and the offense was much more productive. Westlee Tonga's season was mostly a loss, but he's likely to get a medical redshirt. Utah then had to turn to a true freshman walk-on in Siale Fakailoatonga. Not an ideal situation.

Utah needs playmakers. Playmakers that didn't exist on the roster this season outside of Dres and Murphy when he returned. Luckily, Jake Murphy is likely to return, and the Utes will get Scott back, along with an influx of impact receivers. 2014 has to be better, or heads will roll.
