2013 Position Review: Linebackers

The linebackers were a pleasant surprise in 2013 showing plenty of depth and playmakers

Remember when the linebackers at Utah were terrible and lacked depth and playmakers? Not anymore. Utah's linebacking corps was probably the most complete and consistent group on the entire team.

With Trevor Reilly playing spot duty at linebacker, the defense was able to be a bit more versatile in their looks and schemes. Reilly was dominant, posting an all conference season. Jason Whittingham was almost as good, really blossoming after a poor freshman year, into an all conference honorable mention.

Jacoby Hale spent time rushing the passer and as a linebacker. He's still a liability in pass coverage, but his pass rushing skills were a big weapon in 2013. Jared Norris really came into his own in 2013, and was very productive until a late season injury derailed what may have ended up being an all conference season.

Uaea Masina battled injuries as a true freshman, but should be able to make a big impact going forward and once healthy. VJ Fehoko and LT Filiaga were decent in limited duty, but still have limitations.

With the returning depth and playmakers, as well as adding Gionni Paul to the mix, Utah should have one of the better linebacking groups in the Pac 12 in 2014.
