Recruiting Reset: Defense

Looking at the Utah prospects and commits on the defensive side of the ball

Defensive End
Need: 2 to 3

Targets:
Tuli Wily-Matagi (Commit)
Mufi Hunt (Offer)
Tipa Galea'i (Offer)
Porter Gustin (Offer)
Caleb Peart (Offer)
Simi Moala (Offer)
Calvin Brown (Offer)
Chad Hekking
Calvin Brown (Offer)

Breakdown
Wily-Matagi is an intriguing prospect and commit for Utah. The big guy plays QB now at his school in Hawaii, but could end up at either defensive end or tight end once at Utah. It's really a toss-up as to where he'll play. Now, the big question is whether or not Utah can hang on to him. Wily-Matagi has been on a school tour this summer and his verbal is less solid than it was a few months ago.

Hunt is a local prospect that will be at his fourth high school in four years this upcoming season. Tall and lanky, Hunt has a very high ceiling. He's been on campus at Utah more than any other place, but has offers from all over the Pac-12 and the country. It's a tough read on Hunt and where he ends up is anybody's guess.

Galea'i hails from Euless Trinity, a pipeline school for the Utes. He's been picking up offers steadily over the past couple of months, but Utah remains his highest profile suitor. Utes are doing well and appear to be in the driver's seat.

Hekking is a guy that participated at Utah's elite camp and would jump at an offer if extended. Brown hails from the same high school as Kenric Young and the Utes are doing very well with him.

Defensive Tackle

Need: 0 to 1

Targets:
Tevita Mounga (Offer)
Dillon Faamatau (Offer)

Breakdown
Utah has a TON of depth at defensive tackle, and most of it is young depth. They don't need a DT in this class and probably won't take one unless an elite player can be had.

Linebacker

Need: 2 to 3

Targets:
Cody Barton (Commit)
Osa Masina (Offer)
Gabe Reid (Offer)
Tevis Bartlett (Offer)
Casey Toohill (Offer)
Kyler Manu (Offer- Committed to Boise State)
Tavon Cox (Offer)
Daniel Langi (Offer)
Jordon Williams (Offer)
Jared Afalava (JC)

Breakdown
Barton is a solid local pickup that Utah nabbed a few weeks back at their elite camp. He's the younger brother of current offensive lineman Jackson Barton.

Osa is the holy grail of recruits for Utah in the 2015 class. With his brother on the team and the hometown connection, Utah is hanging in the race making his final 8. That number will be cut down to five shortly with the Utes likely making the cut. Masina is wanted by every school in the country, but UCLA appears to be the biggest threat right now. Will come down to signing day.

Tevis Bartlett looked like a strong option for Utah, but recent high profile offers recently have slowed the Utes's momentum. Toohill picked up an early Utah offer and now others have jumped in. Still, the Utes are doing well with Toohill and may be the leader at this time.

Cox is a Florida kid that recently named a top two that included Utah. He's a solid prospect that hails from the same high school as 2014 signee DJ Law.

Manu is committed to Boise State, but has ties to the Utah program and Kyle Whittingham, who may be able to pull off the flip later in the process. Daniel Langi is thought to be a Utah lean, but with his brother heading elsewhere now, that could throw things into chaos.

Afalava is a bounceback from Nebraska that is now at Snow JC. If Utah wants him, they'll probably be able to get him.

Cornerback

Need: 2 to 3

Targets:
Donzale Roddie (Commit)
Michael Jacquet (Commit)
Jacorie Jones (Offer)
Toure Boyd (Offer- JC)
Dan Cruikshank (Offer- JC)
Thaddeus Daniels (Offer- JC)
Jordan Miller (Offer)

Breakdown
Utah has two commits in Jacquet and Roddie, but there's a decent chance that neither of those sticking at corner with wide reciever or possibly even safety (for Jacquet being an option). Roddie's commitment has appeared less than solid as well with him fishing for more offers.

The incoming presence of South Carolina transfer Ahmed Christian lightens the need for a JC transfer, especially with Christian not being eligible until 2015. Boyd has had Utah high on the list, but has been consistent in looking for that 'big offer,' which doesn't bode well for the Utes.

Utah is the most high profile offer for Daniels and he comes from the same JC as former Utah CB Keith McGill. That high profile offer case is the same for Jones, but he has UTSA as his leader.

Miller comes from a school that has sent a couple of players to Utah in Sam Brenner and Jordan Wynn. He has offers from a good chunk of the Pac 12 and the Utes will be in a fight for his services.

Safety

Need: 2

Targets:
Philip Afia (Offer)
Quinn Fabrizio (Offer)
Darrell Adams (Offer)
Tyson Cisrow (Offer)
Justin Reid (Offer)
Jo Jo Henderson
Joshua Moon (Offer)

Breakdown
Fabrizio had the Utes high on his list, but has blown up recently. Utah is still very much in play, but things will be more difficult than they appeared a few months ago.

Utah is doing well with Adams, but Arizona State leads at the moment. Cisrow was a legit option a few months ago, but that interest has waned recently to where he'll be a tough get.

Afia had Utah doing well earlier, but an offer from UCLA or USC would pretty much sew things up. Until then, the Utes are competing with most of the Pac 12.

Special Teams

Need: none

Targets:
Kicker- Chayden Johnston (Commit)

Breakdown
Johnston committed to Utah and will serve a mission before returning in 2017 to take over for the graduating Andy Phillips. He has one of the biggest legs in the country.
