Utah picked up their first commitment from the Sunshine State on Friday as 3-star running back Taylor Thomas decided to end his recruitment and become a Ute. Thomas, who holds offers from Arkansas, Boise State, UCF, South Florida and many others, ultimately decided that Utah was the best fit for him as a player.
"I feel like Utah's offense is the right spot for me. I feel like I can do great things in their offense."
Some players from Florida may feel that Utah would be to far away from home, but that's not a problem for Taylor.
"I'm looking to start a new journey in life. Leaving Florida doesn't matter to me."
Defensive coordinator Kalani Sitake was the first coach to reach out to Thomas and he quickly built up a good relationship with him.
"I talk to Coach Sitake often. He's a great coach. I also talk to almost all the coaches on the offensive side of the ball."
Thomas is an explosive running back. He had 68 carries for 897 yards (13.2 YPC) and 7 touchdowns in 2013, but claims that he's not just a running back but a player that can do everything for his team.
"I think I can do it all. I'm a small back but I can block, I can catch the ball out of the backfield, I run good routes and I'm a threat as a punt returner and kick returner".
He plans on continuing that versatility when he arrives in Utah.
"I'm a weapon. I can really do it all. I don't know where the coaching staff are going to use me, but I just can't wait to get up to Utah."
With a commitment now out of the way, Thomas is squarely focused on his upcoming season at Ed White High School. He also has intentions to start recruiting for Utah. Thomas is good friends with elite recruits Javarius Davis and Chris Barr, and when asked if he's going to start trying to recruit them to Utah, Thomas replied "Yes sir. That's the plan."
Thomas also plans to shut down his recruitment stating he's sure of where he wants to play football in college. He also had a message for Ute fans:
"100% Utah is where I want to play football at. When I get up there, expect things to happen every play when I'm on the field".
